Two questions about this old seamaster

Hi folks, I saw a listing for this watch and have two questions:
1. The steam connected to the crown seems corroded. Is it a concern?
2. Is it common to see the crack on the rehaut between 5-6 oclock?

Thanks in advance.

Stems often have a small amount of corrosion as that is often where moisture enters if the seals are old or compromised. It’s not a deal breaker if the rest of the movement is clean.

The rehaut has a break in it from the factory. This is normal.

Hi Davidt thanks so much. I have attached a pic of the movement. Does it look ok to you?

Always helpful (to you) to post all photos including full face shots and to indicate the price of the watch.

Here is an expanded picture of the movement:

You can see that some of the plating has worn off the top edge of the rotor and along the automatic winding bridge at around 2 o’clock.

This likely means that there is an issue with the automatic winding rotor bearings. Very common issue and can be repaired. That, along with the rust near the crown tells me that this watch is going to need a proper service and some replacement parts. That’s going run you close to $400 to $500 depending on where you are and you may need to add another $100 or so if you need a crown.

You’ll need to take that cost into account in your final price.

Thanks mate. The seller told me it has been serviced. I hope the issue has been fixed.

Then why is there rust near the crown? A good watchmaker would replace the stem, or at least take off the crown and clean off the rust.

Beware.

Yeah, watch coming from a service shouldn't have visible rust. Minimum done is an Evapo-rust bath for a rusted stem to get it clean.

Other than that the watch looks very nice. But with that visible rust on the stem one can't be sure if the movement is hiding some level or corrosion. So unless the seller has photos of the movement parts disassembled showing all clean I would take the watch in servicing if buying it.

are you concerned with the scuff on the bridge or you feel it is not a big problem?

It kind of depends on how you will use the watch. I have couple of watches with that problem but because the rubbing isn't severe and I use those watches maybe once or twice per month I haven't bothered to get them serviced only for that reason. But when I next bring them to service I will get that bearing changed.

If using the watch as your only / main watch it would be a good idea to get the bearing changed so there wouldn't be any extra degrading of the rotor & bridge.

That bearing is getting harder to source though. It's usually around $50 for the bearing but changing it isn't any extra work when service is done.

Very nice looking dial on this watch!

The endlinks don't look like they should do, most likely not Omega ...

Why don't you share more pictures with us? 😎
