I would throw it in the trash

Yup, first thing to do with a Vostok after opening the box is pry off the tin bracelet and toss it. Then enjoy a great quirky watch that you can beat the heck out of for less than $100!

Wow. Seiko running away with it.
My vote is for Hamilton. Looks like IWC and feels solid. Everyone wears a diver. I say get a field watch. Much more stylish.

But can I trust swimming with it with a 50m water resistance? I am weary paying over 220. They say don't swim with 30m so does 50m suffice?

I think “technically” you can swim with 50m water resistance, but I wouldn’t. Since I own the Hamilton I can tell you, while the crown snaps tight to the case after adjusting, it doesn’t feel locked in. I wouldn’t swim with anything that doesn’t have a screw down crown.

That is part of what I want. The current beater I have is quartz and I can't describe it but I don't like wearing quartz for everything, I want something with a weight to it. By beater I am mean everyday everything wear(excluding hammers and such).

Don't hit your wrist with a hammer. Not healthy. 😉

There is a reason the SKX is an almost universal choice as a beater/travel/dive tool piece. Super affordable, look way better when beat up, take anything you throw at them and shrug it off.

Most people that have them find they wear them more then just as a beater. Personally I prefer the 009 as the blue red combo is different then anything else. While the 007 is safe and all black. I wear my 009 a lot more then I thought I would.

2 things belie the price point. The lack of applied furniture on the dial and the bezel kneeling doesn’t exactly match the case if you look at it closely. Both of these are rectified on the MM and the one between the MM and SKX.

Still a killer piece.

I'd get both the Vostok and the Seiko. Vostok for the real dirty jobs (they're only $50).

IMO, Seiko too. I think it'll probably hold its value the best out of the 3

+1 for a Seiko, and for the SKX007. The SKX013 is somewhat small, unless you have a wrist of 5.5 - 6" diameter. Plus if you get tired of the look, you can always mod the SKX007.

I had a SKX013, bought it as I have quite small wrists. Would go for a "regular" sized SKX if I were to get one again - the 013 never felt completely right when wearing it and aesthetically it doesn't quite gel. The proportions are a bit off.

Apparently we are ::facepalm1::
I have heard people claim that they can swim with their Snks on a regular basis. So opinion varies. From the base stats I understand.

Yeah, opinion varies, but not the facts.

When the watch is rated 50M WR (to function down to 162 feet depth), and it's from a reputable company, and has been properly maintained and re-checked annually, it should be fine to take all the way down to 50M/162ft. That would include simply swimming with it. Same with a 30M WR watch, although if the watch just says Water Resistant with no depth rating then I would not swim with it. If I have not tested the WR recently before swimming season, then I wont take the watch in the water.

Eventually the seals will wear out and need to be replaced, yet for some reason people think that a screw down crown is going to do a better job protecting the watch from water intrusion when going under water with worn out seals. Perhaps the screw down crown will be better to keep out the rain with worn out seals, since it's not under pressure, but often those watches will fog up under the crystal as water vapor gets in. I've had it happen to me.

I have a Titanium 200M Citizen Chronograph that doesn't have a screw down crown. I'd have no worries about swimming with it If my watchmaker tests the WR and it passes, despite the lack of screw down crown. But there are still some people here who would feel unsafe swimming with it.

Where do you draw the line?

I have owned the Hamilton and the SKX and only one remains in the collection. The proportions on the SKX013 aren't as good as the larger versions, but I still find it to be a sharp looking watch especially on the stock jubilee style bracelet.

I have both the SKX013 and 007.
The 007 feels noticeably bigger to me although still fairly comfortable.
22mm vs 20mm strap width too.
Then again I am happy wearing 32mm vintage pieces.

I agree with Seiko, but the SKX doesn't do it for me so I went the SNZF 'Sea Urchin' instead. Similar to other comments, I got it to be used as a 'beater', and yet once I put it on it rarely comes off before I've worn it for several days or even weeks.

I got a cheap leather strap and that works for me as well.

This is the internet. Opinion, innuendo, conspiracy theory, and rumors are more important than facts!

A screw down crown helps, but is not necessary for meeting ISO standards for a dive watch. It's more about the gaskets.

Where do you draw the line?
