Does this qualify? New to me, and curious if it started life as black or white dial?
tropical dial means a ............ " BLACK "....................... dial that has changed to a shade of chocolate brown black .......... PPL often confuse patina with tropical
The term "TROPICAL" is used to refer to Chocolate brown black dials that were originally BLACK ...
Old school Rolex and Omega Speedmaster collectors also use the term " BROWN DIAL or CHOCOLATE DIAL "
"TROPICAL" can also be referred to as patina, the result from long term exposure to UV (sun) light which over time has made a BLACK DIAL turn to a CHOCOLATE BROWN BLACK color which occurs on several vintage watches from several watch brands from NATURAL oxidation and sunlight exposure, and also from a BAD batch of black paint resulting to a color change that occurs as a result of age and normal use from exposure to sunlight.
“Tropical” and “Patina”
The term Tropical was not meant to be used when referring to dials that were originally WHITE or dials that have damage - spotted and stained due to corrosion, water, oil, discoloration of lume, design details that are no longer visible, or scratched due to a slip of the hand by a watch smith/maker.
. "Patina" is a much broader term, and can refer to aspects other than base dial color.
