Tritium hands for my Speedmasters 145.0022

Hey you all!

Recently I had my watch serviced, and one of the hands was damaged (the minute hand) in the process.

How much would it cost me to get a good replacement? And since I am looking at Tritium hands I guess I'll have to get the whole set or the patina won't match.

Is eBay a good place to look? Where else do you think I should have a look?

Thank you so much to you all!

When you will reach 200 posts, you’ll be able to post in the WTB section of the forums.

If somebody posts a set for sale in the parts section, you can contact him via PM as long as you are not allowed to post in the sales section directly.

If it was me I'd contact someone who does a good relume work and let him try to fill in the tiny gap, before I'd spend 500 or even much more for a complete and well preserved tritium hand set. The lume of the hands could also be stabilized once they would lie on the bench.

It looks like the original hands have been replaced with Luminova hands at a previous service, along with the bezel.
Getting your watch back to how it left the factory won't be cheap.

I am aware bog that. The current hands are Tritium, but much younger than the dial

You think they can relume the tritium hands?

That's a nice Speedy, very nice dial indeed, so first of all congrats! 😀
It's a shame that it has been ruined during a service though! That unfortunately happen more frequently than it should, but when you are dealing with antique stuff, that's how it goes sometimes!
If I were you, I would just keep it as is, maybe sourcing a correct bezel would have priority here!
..but hunting a better one and selling this as is will take the same effort..stepping up is always nice! 😗
In any case, enjoy your Speedy! 😉
Cheers 😀

Just to clarify, the reason why I bought this Speedmaster is because, based on the extracts, it shares the same date of birth with me, so I am ok with spending a bit extra to make it correct.

The bezel I need is a DON, right?

Is this a good option?

You wouldn’t need a DON bezel, just a period correct one for your late 70’s 145.022. Should have the dot next to 70 as pictured below.

For this watch, I’d send it to James Hyman and get him to relume all 3 hands to match the dial.
The cost will be less than half what you have already been quoted.

Does he re-lume them with Tritium?

100% sure, I tested them.

Can you please elaborate on your testing protocol that results in a 100% certitude? 😀

Both the hands and the dial emit a very faint light in the dark. Then my local watch shop blasted the watch with light and there was no difference in the glow. Moreover the glow is consistent throughout the night, very faint but consistent.

Then they are not tritium, however old they are.
Wouldn't be able to give you a specific date, but they do emit a faint light at night. I had them tested in 3 different places and I can confirm they are tritium

There are places that will take the tritium lume in your hands and re-use it in restoring the hands, while matching the color to the dial. Do a search on the forum, and you will find a number of threads discussing this.

Hands also come up on eBay fairly frequently, and if you scour eBay sales and forum sales, it will become obvious that there are some sellers that always seem to have a lot of Speedmaster parts, so you can contact them directly.
