Tri-Compax feedback

It was $300. I just wanted the watch back, so I paid and didn’t complain.
This is a nice Tri in need of a competent restoration. My suggestion is to send it to RGM in Mt Joy PA. What did this "repair" cost you?

He should not have accepted the watch in the first place.

IMHO and for what it is worth, It does not look like he spent much time attempting to polish off the lug repair. It is probably good and strong. However, what would a little bit of polishing off and refinishing have cost ? I would consider that a job half done. As far as movement goes, they are complex but not beyond the average to good watch makers ability ... he would have had to strip the entire chronograph top plate to get to the main spring, why not tackle the rest ?

Indeed my watchmaker does not consider them challenging at all. Well made and straightforward.

In hindsight, I shouldn’t have brought it to my local shop. Can’t do anything about that. I’ve decided to sell it. Hopefully, to someone that will have this watch properly serviced (and send me a photo when it’s done?).
I don’t know what to price the watch at. I’d prefer selling to someone on this forum, rather than eBay or another place. From reading posts, I get a good feeling from people here who love watches and spend time to share their knowledge.
If I was buying this watch, I’d want to know what it would be worth in restored condition, minus restoration cost and minus some more? in case there is unexpected costs. I don’t know if that is reasonable. The best outcome would be something that is fair to both buyer and seller.
I don’t have enough posts to list this in the sales section.
Would appreciate any feedback.

You can’t sell it here. See rules re post count. Of course someone here may e mail you. Dial is fair but the gold indices are nice, case needs cosmetic work and is now aesthetically worse thanks to that “watchmaker “ and the watch isn’t in running condition. Hour hand needs a re tip or replacement. The overall service needs come to at least $1k. Parts of course are a wild card here. Positives are that it will clean up nice, pushers, crown, most hands are good and the moon disc is a plus. Suggest putting it out on EBay for $3500 or auction with $3500 reserve and go from there.

Thank you for your feedback. I had wondered if it was in the $4,000 ballpark. I just stopped by a jeweler to have the back opened and took some photos. If they look okay, I’ll post some.

I stopped by a jeweler to have the back opened and snapped a few with my phone. Movement is a 287 and there is a number that is hard to read on the inside of the back. Any ideas what those numbers or letters mean? Any thoughts on inside condition? Being that it was easy for the jeweler to open and close the back, I can probably do it myself and photograph the inside better.

Service mark. Techs used to scribe into the case back inners. Movement looks clean.

Have you actually looked up how to use this watch?

Thank you, Larry. I had not looked up how to use the watch. I know to keep it away from water but not the pushers or adjustments. I have set the time and wound it twice being careful to not get to where there is tension. I tried the pushers, but nothing happens, so I am not touching anything anymore.

It does keep time.
It’s a chronograph … you need to be honest about the fact that the chronograph functions don’t work.

I first posted this and thought i was clear that the only thing working was it kept time and the other movements weren’t doing anything.
“My Watch finally came back. The only things the shop repaired was the mainspring and having a lug laser welded. I think the Tri compax was too much for him and he only did the simple task of replacing the mainspring, and had a lug attached. The watch is keeping good time, but none of the other movements are doing anything. I love this watch, but I think this watch needs to end up with someone who has a good watchmaker that works on these”.
I apologize if it wasn’t clear, the chronograph parts of the watch are not working, it only keeps time.

I used the term “none of the other movements are working”, I thought that explained that the chronograph movements weren’t working. Again, sorry for miscommunication. I thought I was being clear about it.

We here on OF are very used to calling out BS or parsing the truth re watch condition. Regardless the new owner will need to folk over serious cash for a complete overhaul so be as detailed in your selling narrative as your posts here.

I would appreciate any help in providing an honest accurate description of the condition of my watch. That is the only way I want to describe it.
The chronographs do not work. The pushers do not do anything. The hour and minutes do work and keep time. I had posted a video clip showing the seconds dial turning, but the large second hand doesn’t move.
The bottom left lug was missing and I had it laser welded. There is some discoloration as shown in the photos and I don’t know if can be polished out. The hour hand could use shaping on the tip or replacement. Anything else to add?

Larry, I want any potential buyer to understand that it needs an overhaul and maybe some parts. Maybe I need to describe it as something different than an overhaul? Is getting the chronograph movements to work a repair or overhaul?
Is this type of repair around $1,000 or closer to $2,000? Any price would have potential repair costs subtracted.
Please correct any of my misunderstandings or mistakes.
Alex

How about:

"287 Tri-Compax for parts, just returned from botched repair effort, worse now than from before. Ticks, somewhat. Chronograph does not work. Perfect project but not for the feint of heart or impoverished. What you see in the pictures is what you will get. Cash only, no returns"

You have all you need in your narrative … just state the facts and yes, riff on what @TexOmega stated. He brought his back from the grave successfully.
