If Vingegard had any concerns about his likelihood to hold the lead he would have been a fool to do this.
I can hardly put in words how much I disagree and how happy I am this attitude doesn’t prevail in this sport. It makes it a much, much more beautiful spectacle to behold.
There’s been multiple instances when such sportsmanship cost somebody the victory and still wasn’t regretted. See Ullrich waiting for Armstrong for example (and didn’t the same thing happen the other way round? That I don’t remember precisely).
It was a gentlemanly gesture but it would not have been ungentlemanly in any way if he’d continued at full-gas after Pog came down.
Possibly not, but to say he’d been a fool to want to decide the biggest sporting competition of his life on the bike, one on one, to find out who’s the strongest… I still don‘t agree with that at all, quite the contrary.
Fully agree regarding the two men. I learned today in the German commentary that until 4 years ago, Vingegaard was working part time in a fish factory to make a living. What a couple of years it must’ve been for him.
Putting him next to someone like Armstrong, I’d sure know how my sympathy would be divided.
