Last year my work was pretty quiet and I was able to arrange things so that I could work in t,he morning and catch a lot of the live coverage. That was a joy and compensated for the somewhat southerly income. This year my work has picked up strongly so I think I’ll be restricted to the highlights show on ITV 4.

I hope Cav rides and picks up that win. Somehow though I don’t think Patrick Lefevere is particularly sentimental and my money is on Fabio Jakobsen for the sprinter’s spot unless he gets ill or injured.
Look at you! Bang on the money with your Cav/Fabio predictions. (Buy a lottery ticket! 😁)

Yep, a good win for Fabio. After his horrific crash in 2020 I wondered if he would ever ride again, let alone achieve his dream of winning a TdF stage. Chapeau!

Thank you but it wasn’t exactly an “out there” prediction. I think I’ll continue my long held strategy re the lottery. I win £2 every week by not buying a ticket.

My interest in the TDF is slightly different, although I do follow the ground based stuff too.

Wow. Certainly didn’t expect this - let’s just hope it’s not due to COVID…
Looking forward to tomorrow!

What are we talking about? What did I miss, I did not tune in today or yesterday.
Saw something about some protestors yesterday...but was there something else?

The most exciting mountain stage in memory. Pogacar cracked on the final climb up Col du Granon. Barguil up ahead of the yellow jersey group, caught by a renewed Quintana (great to see him blaze his old form), then the attack by Vingegaard who dropped everyone. He passed the leaders on the road for a convincing win. Pogacar now in 3rd on GC behind Vingegaard and Bardet. Incredible. Loved when Wout van Aert congratulated Vingegaard during his post-race interview "...f**kin' hell...!". Huge class from TP congratulating Vingegaard. Sure beats the old days of single team domination and expected outcomes. Super fun.

Sorry, I didn’t want to spoiler in case someone was still watching with a delay or so, but I guess clicking on this thread means accepting that one might be confronted with the results of the day. 😀

Couldn’t have summed it up any better than @mydeafcat
Got exciting very early when TP was without helpers and Roglic and Vingegard pulled maybe 10 attacks or so in rotation, forcing TP to respond to every single one of them on his own. What a day.

Buddy of mine watches his first TdF stage today and was a little disappointed when I told him it’s not like that every single day - or every single year even.

Sound like I missed a good finish indeed!
Certainly was, see-sawing all the way. Good to see three Brits in the top ten.

This is the first stage I've watched on ITV4 and it is also nice to see Lizzie Deignan as a commentator.

Galibier, Croix de Fer and Huez tomorrow -- should be another cracker.

For those new to TdF discussion on OF there are a number of us who follow the race in real time through a variety of channels (and even by the roadside), get over-excited and post spoilers. So if you want to wait for the 11pm PDT summary to find out what happened then it's better not to read this thread until the following day.

Another great stage. Pogacar clearly isn't finished and Vingegaard proved he has the engine and legs to match.

Alpe d'Huez never fails to impress; I just wish IQ was an attendance prerequisite for some fans. Those smoke flares are the most idiotic way to celebrate, imo. I have enough trouble breathing clean air up a small hill. I cannot imagine inhaling that shit in the middle of a brutal 13km climb.

Kudos to Pidcock who outpaced his childhood hero. I was never a Froome fan when he was at Sky (like USPS during the L.A. days, the race winner was pretty much a given), yet it was nice to see him keep pace at 37 after all his recent setbacks. (IPT is, essentially, a Canadian team as much as Israeli so any time they're in the break - or winning a stage like last week! - makes me happy).

I was thinking the same thing. Not to mention the very possible lack of visibility.
When you are packed in wheel to wheel, it would not take much for one little bump to take out a whole lot of people...

Those clowns have been camped out there for about six days, many of them are drunk or stoned and ready for mayhem once the riders come through. Hard to fathom the security nightmare the Tour presents to the organizers. The other day you had the climate idiots. Tomorrow, who knows. But using smoke flares is just asinine.

Châpeau to Pidcock yesterday but how much G must be rueing Day One when he left his gilet on… he’d be in second place in the GC right now if he’d been a bit more switched on.

The Tour organisers said that after the last time up the Alpe d’Huez they would investigate security, etc. to make it safer. That was before Covid, now the breathing public are more of a threat than a crash. The organisers clearly thought that the logistics and expense of lining the Alpe with fencing was too difficult - I think it might be a while until we see the Alpe on the Tour again.

Our first stage win since Steve Bauer's way back in 1988. Huge.
