I didn’t see this episode but typically the ‘experts’ estimates for watches that go to auction are far too low. Maybe it’s intentional - creates a bit of drama and everyone ends up pleasantly surprised!!

Edit: my comment relates to the BBC Antiques Roadshow.

To think that this was left in a junk box and the owner got it for nothing.

Amazing.

Thanks for sharing and that is some find. Though I never understand why they provide retail price estimates. Either you are keeping it so get an insurance estimate or selling it where an auction estimate makes sense. That lady is never going to be able to sell it at a retail price.

Not so sure about that. All they have to say is “As Seen on Antiques Roadshow”, and attach the link above.

Anyway, most of the experts seem to recommend an insurance value a bit above retail to take into account the cost of finding a replacement.

That part could have been stated, but edited out.

In my estimation, the BBC version of Antiques Roadshow routinely emphasizes historical interest over ultimate monetary value. The American version seems to cater to how historical interest ultimately contributes to auction outcomes. Still, you could be right about the increased drama when something ultimately fetches way more than an on-site appraiser's estimate.
