·Actually, though it can function as a GMT hand (well, actually not, since the bezel doesn't rotate), the original purpose of the orange hand was to offer a 24 hour hand for "explorers" in caves or other dark regions who might become disoriented without normal daylight to assist their natural biorhythms.
As to Sean's first question, I've seen these in the $11-20K range, with most nicer examples right in the middle.
