TinTin Value ! ? ! ????

I bought my TinTin back in 2016 and she’s my daily driver. I truly love the watch. I’m sitting here at a bar and had a fond look at the time and a thought crossed my mind that I wouldn’t mind owning two of these watches and keep the nicer one in the safe…because she really is a beauty. Googled it up and a price tag of 19,000 was the first to pop up. Indonesian rupiah surely. Scrolled and saw another selling for 22,000. Phillippino peso? Ohhhh my god it’s really USD? WTF happened? I think I paid 3,900 USD for it back in the day and have nearly left it behind in numerous hotels. Bad news is that now I need a new watch as I can’t justify wearing that value on my wrist everyday. Good problems I suppose!

Mate these things were in the ebay recommended modern thread at one point around 2016 because they were at the time the cheapest way to buy a speedmaster pro, and I was saying stuff like “if you don’t mind the red and white ring, its a discount speedy”. Grey market dealers like Joma Shop had like a hundred of them and they were being dumped in online throw-out bins.

Now people can’t get enough of them and they’ve sold for very strong prices lately.

Serious question for you experts out there. The TinTin is due for a service. Anything I should consider to preserve current value? The hesalite is probably an 7/10 but do I dare ask them to polish it or any other scratches out? Advice greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Unbelievable. I’ve always loved the dial but I have notoriously bad taste. Could be the first and only fashion decision I’ve made right.

Something else I should mention is I don’t see these going crazy beyond where they are, and a big part of that is that they’re now roughly on a parity point with another limited edition racing dial which has been around this mark for years now, the Speedmaster Japan racing LE, reference 3570.40. I would say the Japan LE is at least as nice if not nicer than the Tintin to most people so I just don’t see it exceeding that reference in value much if at all. So if you’re buying it because you like it by all means but to anyone thinking this is an investment at the current price, I really don’t think it has more room to go up now.

Fair point. And I’ve always loved and wanted one of those racing dials as well.

It’s the same watch you have worn for 6 years. It doesn’t know it’s worth that much, and neither did you until a few days ago- it shouldn’t affect your wearing habits. If this were sitting in your closet still in the box, then sure- maybe think of it more preciously.
I bought my 16750 (yes, people here have heard this a thousand times), for $2k when it was just an old Rolex. In fact, it was a fairly unloved model as it wasn’t a 1675 and it wasn’t the new glossy dialed, gold blinged out Master II. I beat the living shit out of that watch and still wear it regularly. The fact that it’s worth what it’s worth does give me occasional pause for thought (and I will admit that I don’t wear it for hard field duty anymore- I have a sub for that), but it’s still just the old Rolex I wore for 20 years on the daily and didn’t care.

I appreciate the perspective. I’ll still wear it. Just not changing the oil in the truck anymore. Rolex has always been a dream too. A decent Sub could be my oil change watch.

I never understand people who wear a watch they like for years then discover its current market value and get skittish about its ability to be worn. It's a watch, just wear it. Values go up and down.

I agree, but I also get it. I couldn’t afford a few of the watches I bought many years ago now. As I have watched the vintage Rolex market escalate over the past few years, it has made me think about the fact that my watch was worth more than my car. Although we may look at these as just watches, the value of some of our collective pieces is life changing money for many people.
That’s said, once it leaves the box, it isn’t a “collector” grade piece anymore- don’t let any sly salesman tell you otherwise…it’s just a used watch at that point.

It’s a simple hedge against risk, mate. I travel for a living and not always to first tier cities. If you can stroke a check for a 20k replacement watch tomorrow then I guess you’re a better man than me. Enjoy your weekend.

Tintins have been recently trading as low as 12k usd.

EDIT: Dude/Dudette, you got a great watch. Don't change a thing. Keep looking at your wrist and grinning. That's what it's all about. Everything else is BS.

As above. Don’t get too excited. We are in a failing market as the price bubble is deflating and asking a stratospheric price is one thing, achieving it is another. I’m sure you are just as impressed with a $12k valuation but it may be that the true achievable price settles lower still before too long. If the value really worries you, selling sooner rather than later would be my suggestion.

I’d entirely agree with this, I just don’t see them going up more from where they are so if you love and enjoy it keep it but if you’re wanting to cash out I’d be listing it now

Thanks, brother. I’ll never sell. I love the TinTin.

Yup and even then sitting for a while. But technically 😁 you could say they have been trading as low as $4,500… a couple months ago one sold in our private sales section for $4,500, no box or papers, and needed a service. However, after that, before the decline began, one sold in our private sales section for around ~£15k (full kit) and since that sale, I believe three additional ones have been listed in our private sales page for the same price. Then, all were subject to repeated bumps and price drops down to around $12k, and all are still sitting. A lot of the major dealers have them for sale around 17k and they just aren’t going anywhere. There are a lot of unrealistic prices and stale stock at the moment.

You say you love the Tin Tin and would never sell it, so then the strategy is clear, if you travel in sketchy areas you have to decide if the risk of theft is worth it. If you feel uncomfortable just leave it at home and wear something cheaper, and wear the Omega at home or in perceived safe situations. Risk management.

Remember seeing this and thinking it looks cool with that Croatian flag on the dial (I'm Croatian). And I also thought, no one is gonna buy this. Oh my how I was wrong. Crazy prices these things fetch today

The problem, especially with Rolex is the scarcity, the spiraling prices and the dammed media coverage. I’m finding that my watches attract way too much attention these days, specially my Ceramic GMT and my Pepsi. They no longer go downtown.

Er, because some people aren’t comfortable wearing something so valuable on their person when out and about, because of the risk of loss or theft, or making them a target? It’s a pretty normal and reasonable concern. It has nothing to do with liking the watch any less.
