Thoughts on this 168.005?

Hi guys,

Tempted to pull the trigger on this one. Definately polished but IMO, still has a pretty well preserved case and lug profile. May I find out your thoughts on this piece?

Is it worth the asking price about 2K USD.?

Thanks in advance!

Looks ok at first glance, about average overall. The damage to the lacquer is pretty common, but does affect value.

Thanks guys!

My bad. its actually a 14902 SC and not a 168.005.

Does that change anything in terms of price expectation?

Thanks again!

From my understanding, differences between 14902s and 168.005s are nearly imperceptible, so the number doesn’t affect the value for me. 14902s may be slightly rarer? The movement may also be different. Someone with more experience can share which movement, if any, is preferred.

It’s a decent piece, but not at that price. Be patient, there are better examples that pop up for cheaper.

14902s and early-mid 168.005s will have a cal 561 movt.
After around 66/67 .005s could /should have a cal 564.
Both excellent movements.

The BOR on the OP’s watch is a bonus but i don’t I think the end links match with a dogleg.

The case is ok but far too much patination on the dial for $2000.

I quite like it. The dial has some patina and the case has been polished, but both are within my personal tolerance. You'd have to ask yourself the same. I also like the gold furniture.

I'll be an outlier in that I don't think $2k for this watch and bracelet is out of bounds. I think it's fair - not great, not bad. Another tolerance is the time and energy you are willing to put in finding a nicer example for the same amount of money as this one. I find that when these refs come unpolished with a perfect dial and bracelet the asking price is above $2k

It’s a very nice but not gorgeous watch, I’d wear it. Price seems a little high, but maybe only by 10%, in my opinion. If it was the non date then I think $2k would be correct. My caveat would be that I haven’t been watching these closely since I bought my 167.005 a few years ago and prices may be stronger than I thought.

I agree w comments above, dial should be excellent at that price. A nice example of how overexposed photos can hide dial problems.

I agree. Keep looking. That one's not gonna disappear quickly at that price

I don't think it's bad. Agree with most of what has already been said.

Here's my wife's 14902 for comparison. I think it's pretty good, although not mint. Over the years I've watched others for sale and have yet to see one for sale as nice as ours. I think you could wait awhile before finding one as nice as what you found. But compare yours to ours to see if you'd be happy with it. Again, I think yours is one of the nicer ones that have come up.

14902 should have a date. Yours looks to be a 14900 or 167.005

Here's my 14900 as example

Sold for $1,700 and not even a movement image. Looks to be less than average
So, coming full circle, how does the OP watch look for $2k by comparison? If we all waited for the excellent dial pie pan with unpolished case on a bracelet for $2k or less none of us would have very many watches.

Like several of the original posts, I don't think the price was crazy. Just not nice enough or cheap enough to get collectors excited. But as you rightly pointed out, a new enthusiast is in a different position, and they don't have unlimited patience.

I was in on that ebay bidding, though I got out before the last minute of craziness (I was at 1425, but had a few beers in me when I made that regrettable bid... I really thought it would be surprising to see that clear $1000!).

I almost want to start a thread: "What IS the value of a pie pan these days?".

I originally saw THIS thread and said to myself "eh, thats a $1600 watch at best, $2k is an overpay". Right now I'm thinking "that sounds like a good price!"

I've been keeping an eye out and seeing a ton of really beat up watches, a ton of re-dials, a ton of over-polishes, etc, all go for absurd prices, just because it has a not awful looking pie pan dial.

The market for them is nuts, particularly in the last few weeks for some reason!

I'd be interested to read that thread, I vote you start it!
