Hi,
Here is what was presented to me as a 1st owner 145022-68 transitional. It looks honest to me despite the damaged DON. These are the only pictures I have for now but I’ll probably see it in person this weekend. I was wondering if there were any obvious red flags...
Seller asks 7k€ with the 1039-516

thanks!

That seems strong price for the state of the watch.

the attraction in a watch of this quality is the low price, which this watch lacks.

You have to value it by taking off the value of a bezel as this one has little to no value.

the dial is poor, the body colour is dry and granular, the plots are weak or missing and an unattractive colour.

the watch is largely correct, but unattractive.

so to be attractive it has to be cheap.

the question is in today’s world what is cheap. ?

to me around $5,000

not that I can find one for that right now!

So your saying if you deduct 1k for the bracelet your only looking a 4K for a 68 transitional? Is this in line with Speedmaster 101 pricing?

I am saying you have to factor in the zero value of the bezel combined with a dial that only a mother can love.

it’s very difficult to value any item of dubious attraction in an uncertain market.

I agree with you that in that Market the average watches are quite are to sell, saw many 2998, or other ref that are not sold since months

I know of a 145.022-68 that changed hands for over USD15,000 last month.

Prices for top quality are rising and attractive watches are selling.

watches with poor or damaged parts, are not.

some of the latter are beginning to look cheap when valued for parts.

The spread between top and poor is continuing to widen. At some point the spread gets so wide that the cheaper pieces get bought up for parts or restoration & flip.

Are you seeing the top pieces move hands quickly? From my own observations the really nice all correct pieces regardless of price that I inquire about are selling fast

To me the above watch looks the be in good condition with the exception of the bezel. I wonder if someone replace a nicer bezel with what we see on there now. The bezel is the biggest negative I see.

Not sure if you're aware of this but @Spacefruit basically defines the market for speedmasters. I'd trust him on this.

Thanks for the input guys! I was thinking the pictures were not good enough to decide it’s real appeal and that I would know better seeing it in my hand.
The 1019’s presence was also an interesting point to me as they seem to go for around 1500$ these days.
But if you think it’s not worth it, I’ll go to the next one 😀
Thanks!

Look at the dial on the OP watch. It’s really damaged. It’s really hard to sell if it’s as bad as I think it is, but if you are like me an eternal optimist then go see it and make sure - you never know.

Fair point - I forgot to underline my values are always head only.

a bracelet may indeed be worth a great deal but that is also another round of assessment as bracelets can vary in quality greatly.

so I choose to look at head only first, then move on the bracket.

Gentlemen these were, are and always will be tool watches, not grand complications.

I hope you will excuse me: maybe I have handled too many of thems... 😁
That watch has some spectacular originality issueS along with its dial and bezel quality.

anyone spot even one?

just to be clear I’m such a bargain hound I was bidding.
