Does your house insurance include Accidental Damage? Might be worth looking into this, it might cover some/most/all of the service cost, depending what your excess is. You just might need to be creative in how you word your claim...

Dude, you had some bad luck 16 years ago and you are still annoyed by it? Send the watch in, fix it and then enjoy it. Live is too short to care so deeply about these type of things.
