Thoughts On Other Brands

What are thoughts on brands, such as Junghans, Glashutte, Tissot, and Frederique Constant?

I always see these mixed in with Omega. Just wanted to know where they stand compared to the likes of Omega, Longines, Rolex, etc.

Tough to answer as there are so many competing variables: value, quality, aesthetics, function, status. I think you might have to narrow the scope of your question some.

Junghans for example. Is the quality worth the price point? I like the aesthetics on most of their watches.

Junghans began to produce wristwatches ~100 years ago, and still do. You really need to narrow down your interests significantly, if you expect to receive any insightful replies. Vintage? Contemporary? Which models, etc.

You’ll soon learn that Rolex is the only brand.

Rolex is not the only brand, just the best brand. 😁

This is EASY. Just go over to The Rolex Forum and ask the same question. You’ll soon learn that Rolex is the only brand. It is now, it always was, and it always will be. Brands like Omega, as well as the other brands that you mentioned, do not exist. They never existed.

Seems like the Rolex folks have an appreciation for omega's as long as they are limited edition. The 321 and Snoopy 50 especially seem to get some love among the Rolex crowd.

I don't know. The Meister S chronoscope is incredibly chunky at 16 mm thick: the pilot is both chunky and has what I considered to be a wildly unattractive case. Neither one strikes me as having the fine quality of finishing to the hands or dial that you see in Omega. And although nobody should really ever buy a watch as an investment piece I have no idea how these look in terms of resell.

Not a brand I could ever be happy with. If I'm going to drop any amount of serious money on an expensive watch it better meet some wearability criteria.

Regarding Tissot: I personally have zero experience with this brand and they have some watches, especially in the Powermatic 80 line, that look pretty nice. And the price point is exactly right for somebody who wants a sporty Swiss wrist watch look but doesn't want to pay for an Omega or a Rolex. However, they are mass produced en masse.

My personal opinion of Tissot is probably quite shaded because the only people I know personally that own these watches are people that really wanted a Rolex but couldn't afford one or didn't want to save for one (in another case, "I have a huge Rolex collection just trust me bro and here are more pictures of my two Tissots"). It really strikes me as the brand you purchase when you couldn't afford any sort of top end Swiss watch. And I admit, that's probably not fair.

Tissot is an excellent value. Tissot’s watches may be mass produced, by so are those made by Rolex and Omega. And while Rolex and Omega produce high quality watches, they are a far cry from the top end of Swiss horology.

I agree, which is why I added "en masse." There is mass production and there is Mass production. Just thought is produced in many, many multiples compared to Omega. The price and prestige reflects this.

And I realize that Omega and Rolex aren't, for example, JLC. I mean, there's a company that can build a chronograph, date, calendar, moon phase combination at UNDER 13mm thickness, still have five bar water resistance, and just have an incredible level of finishing on the movement. And specially omega, that is a place where they really suffer. The coaxial escapement may add to the thickness and they seem to be resolving some of that with the 2022 and 2023 releases, but I agree--- still not on top end.

Good to hear that they are good watches though! As I said, I was pretty aware that my opinion was.. impacted

I’ve said this in the past but I’ll post it here again regarding other brands, I like some Rolex some Zenith and a variety of other brands.

The three brands that I like the most in terms of the quality of their watches despite the lack of brand recognition are Zenith, JLC and GO, especially used. You can get a great El Primero, or a Master Compressor, or a PanoMaticLunar for so cheap it’s a steal considering how good they are.

Best overall S
Well said. The BRAND - nobody does it better. The WATCHES - good, no better than Omega and maybe not as good. The COMPANY and their business practices:
