Hi, my name is Marsimaxam and I'm a douchebag.
Fun post Archer. I already suspected this was the case with the vast majority of young people. Yep, that Paul Newman in 50 years or less might be worth fifty bucks.
Not as long there are enough rich people to speculate about its value
😉
It is a cool video. I initially thought it would have been fairer to show the watch in the flesh, to assess the quality and all, but they did it in the end (with other watches) and it did not change much the results. I mean, the Tudor vs the Orient? because "it's bigger"? C'mon...
🤦
That reminded me of something. A few years ago a colleague told me he couldn't tell between a cheap and a luxury watch (at least he was honest
😁, the discussion started because of the 2 watches I had at the time: one Omega and one Hamilton). He was only a few years younger than me but he grew up with the Internet, smartphone, mp3, disposable things, etc. while I did not (I am a millennial but pre 90's). But my parents who were never into watches or luxury stuff can tell.
I think that most of the younger generation can tell between a nice and an ugly design. But they cannot tell between a nice and a cheap execution because they do not take the time to look at things. They are lacking attention to details and luxury is all about it... So, as long as from 2m away it looks ok, it's good for them. As we say "nice from far, far from nice"
😁
At least all hope is not lost: one of the people in the video admired the quality of the stitching of the Junghans' strap.
There was an analogy with HiFi, I think it is a bit different because of how the sense involved works.
It is quite difficult to see the difference in quality between a Tudor or a Seiko 5 if you are a few meters away. If you know a bit about watches, you will recognize them and know which one is a luxury watch and which one is not (regardless of how big it look or the material of the strap ^^), but it will not strike you which one was better made.
Now, a few meters away from speakers? You can hear the difference between an mp3 file and a lossless or Hi-Res one. Or a non-hifi and a hifi system. For sure an audiophile will hear even a bigger difference than a regular person or tell which HiFi system sound better than another HiFi system - regardless of his own taste. The audiophile brain is trained for/used to it.
But you cannot "cheat" someone who knows nothing about HiFi just by being a bit further away.
It is still interesting to have their opinions, especially regarding how the brands succeeded (partially at least for Rolex) or failed to catch their attention.
