I have a budding watch fan in my millennial. He’s been running sub 1k watches by me. It’s been interesting. If his mother wanders in while I’m on the phone with him, she blows a gasket. When I was their age, I could barely pay my rent, car loan i let alone contemplate a Rolex.

Or the Rolex Repeater Ring on all their models...

That is far too much "Rolex" for my taste. Once on the dial is enough.

Hi, my name is Marsimaxam and I'm a douchebag.

Fun post Archer. I already suspected this was the case with the vast majority of young people. Yep, that Paul Newman in 50 years or less might be worth fifty bucks.

And let's not get started on audio equipment (especially the pro's and con's of various interconnects, speaker cables and power cables).

Oh, let's do. 😁

The emporer has no clothes!

I worked a decade as an electronics technician. I certainly know bullshit when I see/hear it.

That said, I could tell you about some fun (and not so fun) experiences.

Ever hear about the tweeters that needed a helium tank and one heck of a huge power supply to ionize said helium?

The only thing you need is an NH35 movement and a watchmaker. The rest is gravy.

The San Marten "Tiger Shark" I gave away was $125 worth of decent dive watch and kept time very well because it was adjusted.

Not as long there are enough rich people to speculate about its value 😉

It is a cool video. I initially thought it would have been fairer to show the watch in the flesh, to assess the quality and all, but they did it in the end (with other watches) and it did not change much the results. I mean, the Tudor vs the Orient? because "it's bigger"? C'mon...🤦

That reminded me of something. A few years ago a colleague told me he couldn't tell between a cheap and a luxury watch (at least he was honest 😁, the discussion started because of the 2 watches I had at the time: one Omega and one Hamilton). He was only a few years younger than me but he grew up with the Internet, smartphone, mp3, disposable things, etc. while I did not (I am a millennial but pre 90's). But my parents who were never into watches or luxury stuff can tell.
I think that most of the younger generation can tell between a nice and an ugly design. But they cannot tell between a nice and a cheap execution because they do not take the time to look at things. They are lacking attention to details and luxury is all about it... So, as long as from 2m away it looks ok, it's good for them. As we say "nice from far, far from nice" 😁
At least all hope is not lost: one of the people in the video admired the quality of the stitching of the Junghans' strap.

There was an analogy with HiFi, I think it is a bit different because of how the sense involved works.
It is quite difficult to see the difference in quality between a Tudor or a Seiko 5 if you are a few meters away. If you know a bit about watches, you will recognize them and know which one is a luxury watch and which one is not (regardless of how big it look or the material of the strap ^^), but it will not strike you which one was better made.
Now, a few meters away from speakers? You can hear the difference between an mp3 file and a lossless or Hi-Res one. Or a non-hifi and a hifi system. For sure an audiophile will hear even a bigger difference than a regular person or tell which HiFi system sound better than another HiFi system - regardless of his own taste. The audiophile brain is trained for/used to it.
But you cannot "cheat" someone who knows nothing about HiFi just by being a bit further away.

It is still interesting to have their opinions, especially regarding how the brands succeeded (partially at least for Rolex) or failed to catch their attention.

Watches are just as easy as hifi to tell luxury vs not. Time them, and the one that is really accurate is the cheap quartz one, and the one that is not as good is the $$$ luxury one 😎

It’s all comes down to education and a desire to learn. I knew nothing about wine years ago, I would drink a $10 or a $100 bottle and I could tell one was a little smoother, but that was about it. I had a friend who made wine sit me down with a flight of about 6 wines varying in price- a blind test, and told me what I should be paying attention to- I was shocked that with his guidance, I was able to pick out nuances I didn’t pay attention to before. It’s all about education and a desire to learn.

Better do another sweep of the house, Rolex thieves break in with the expectation that it will take about a year to find the model they want
Aren’t they required to first steal less desirable Rolex models before they can move up to the stainless steel sports models?

Correct. JW has studied this phenomenon extensively...
They also have to take an old bricked cell-phone, some costume jewelry and a rubber dog poo before they can qualify to steal a Rolex.

Wasn't he Jerry's obnoxious neighbor on the Seinfield show?
Ha! I brought up something from Seinfeld the other day and my 25 year old niece had no idea what I was talking about. 😬

Does Extra Virgin Olive Oil come from extremely ugly olive trees?

Asking for a friend...

note: P.C., no...not at all...I'm an ass, I own it...apologies to any offended.

Do you need to wear watch with Helium valve to set up those tweeters? 😀

Fortunately not!

The actual tweeters were terrific, though the hissing of the helium was a distraction. Unfortunately, the other drivers basically couldn't keep up.
