This is why you don’t get cocky

So I thought I could always distinguish a watch that had been redialed with ease.
I purchased the watch below online and even after receiving it, I had no doubts the dial was original. I was so sure I even sent it for service and started looking for a replacement bezel until I showed a picture of the watch to a member on the forum to which he replied within seconds that it was an obvious redial.
So my ego is shattered and I will be staying away from these older models for some time.
The lesson here is "Don't get too cocky"

Sorry to hear that, I hope you didn't pay too much. The OMEGA font is the immediate giveaway for me.

Sorry you got bitten- it happens to the best of us when we get cavalier. You can either resell it and cut your losses, or double down and try to source an original dial for it. I have tried the later, I would suggest the former.

I'm definitely no expert, I probably would not have been able to tell.
But when you know what the issues actually are it does become easier to see.

Pretty good re-dial though lol

I don't know what I am looking at besides a beautiful watch, but no matter what, thank you for having the humility to still share this lesson with the entire community. 👍

The fact that there are quite a number of franken watches and other "refinished" ones out there, combined to my definite ignorance when it comes to vintage watches is certainly the reason why I am currently mostly focusing on new/modern watches while I keep learning from this community day after day.

Well, the lack of any marking below six o'clock is a pretty bad sign 🤔

At least it is attractive - I bet it looks great in the flesh!

Yeah- this would fall into the better redial category.

Give it as a gift to your brother-in-law. He will be forever thankful.

I know absolutely sod all about vintage watches so can’t comment. But it looks pretty nice and as something to wear ok in my book.

Hopefully the price was ok...If I was looking to buy something of that age, I’d likely try to stick to places like this where I may have a better chance of getting something good

A few of the markers are slightly off as well.

At least no one can say it's missing the serifs!!

Am surprised that the “Seamaster” script is reasonable, while the “Omega”, in theory easier to reproduce, is unacceptable.

I wouldn’t be so broken hearted. When you pointed out it was a redial I spotted it right off but I could see myself overlooking that as it definitely is quality compared to what I normally see as redials. If that’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in a while I see no reason to hang your head. And I’m sure you learned something from it so even that has value.

I see you are the refreshing honest type! I suspect that goes hand in hand with giving yourself a hard time when you fall short of your standards.
It seems here, as is the case elsewhere, that even those with a keen eye for detail seem to benefit from healthy debate with other such people. There's no shame in that. I wish I has such eyes! FWIW I have really enjoyed the watches you have posted here. Good luck.

I know nothing about vintage Omega, just wonder if it should be a “Swiss Made” somewhere on the dial for that reference.

Just wondered if there is a thread about good redials, found one woth last post dated to 2014. This looks pretty nice and this why wouldn't matter to me while wearing.

I was almost fooled by a redialed Constellation that was listed on eBay’s US site last year. Some other OF members were looking at it too. Some of the redials that are coming from Asia now are very, very good. You really have to be careful.

I think it's better not to share anything here, it's either a re-dial or something really unexpected like the watch was used as a murder weapon etc.
