Also, at some point I want to get an 1175 bracelet for this watch.

So another update in 5 years?

Seriously though, that Speedmaster looks brand new for a 50 year old watch. Congrats!

That might happen sooner. Finding a nice step dial for a reasonable price took some time, and I figured the swap could happen when it was in for a regular service.

Congratulations on a successful mission - enjoy!

Here is mine.

Very cool. Did it come with the 1039 bracelet?

Yes it’s a real dial that has been poorly reprinted. It’s not common for it to have happened on speedmasters. It’s very common on other watches when replacement dials where hard to source during the 60’s and 70’s. Many watchmakers offered this service to “restore “ damaged dials. Back then originality didn’t matter.

Sourcing a correct 861 step dial will not be impossible, but not cheap. Although once you have you have a pretty great watch.

that comment aged well!!!

I thought I would give another update to my first ever post on OF. I was able to find a proper step dial and verify its authenticity with the help of @Foo2rama. I just got it back from the watchmaker with the new to me dial installed. The light was not great when I took the photos, but I was eager to share the results.

Absolute beauty of a dial! Congrats on bringing back your dad’s watch to a wonderful state!

A moving story, @wagudc - I had not seen your first post. Sorry for your loss. On the watch front though, congrats on bringing your Dad’s watch back to its full glory.

Congrats, that is a fantastic outcome. I've been looking to replace the repainted dial on the watch I inherited from my father for 10 years, but no luck so far.

Good luck on your search. A -69 Speedmaster is a pretty easy dial to find. If I was willing to pay $1000+ I could have found one quickly. This one popped up at the right price and around the same time as the watch was due for a service.

Not to hijack the thread- but what watch?

Early 60s IWC cal 853 in a 36mm Ingenieur-style case.

It is a great watch, would be wonderful to find a dial.

This thread has got a lot of traction, so I thought I would add this image of my dad wearing the watch. I've posted it in the forums elsewhere, but it is too good of a photo not to share. The picture was taken by my aunt who is a professional photographer. I'm not sure what caused dial to need refinishing, but perhaps it had something to do with not maintaining the seals and wearing the watch while fishing.

I think a thread of Dads or granddads or other relatives wearing the watch we inherited would be interesting.

Pretty sure this is the IWC on my father's wrist in the late 60s or maybe 70s.
