Thinking of trading my ST1 to get the 321

Hi All. I am thinking of selling my ST1 in order to purchase the 321. I LOVE my ST1. It was my grail Speedmaster version and frankly aesthetically still is. But now reading up on the 321 and the movement I feel like if I owned one Speedmaster considering the history behind the movement of 321, it should be this one (?). The price is on the higher end and I do not feel the need to own 2 Speedys in my very limited collection. The other thing I am considering is I love the ST1 bc it’s on leather and it’s THE leather strap watch in my collection whereas the 321 is on a beautiful bracelet but I’m on a waiting list for a SS DJ Rolex (right now my SS watch is the AT Skyfall but I grew tired of not having an adjustable clasp). I just respect the 321 movement so much I’m a bit torn Any opinions would be appreciated. Cheers all!

For me, if they only thing that is pulling you to the 321 is the movement, that would not be enough reason to upgrade. I will also admit that when I am looking at watches, the aesthetics is what will make me interested in a model versus searching out models just because it has a certain movement.

Don't do it.

You'll regret it, which will affect how you feel about the 321.

They are different and you will enjoy both equally.

If you keep the ST1 and never get the 321, you'll still enjoy the ST1.

Can't remember if I said it, but don't sell the ST1.

Have you tried the 321 on yet? If not, that’s a must before making this kind of decision. After that, go with your gut…

Not sure if you have a 321 lined up and ready for purchase or if you're planning to get on a list somewhere; it's unclear in the OP. I would also suggest (as someone did earlier) that you try it on before letting go of your ST1.
That ST1 you have is a keeper - as is the 321. If you only have room for one, I would suggest covering all bases, recon wise and check out the 321 in person before finalizing your decision.

If i can only have one Omega, it will be the 321. Aesthetically and historically, 321 encompassed everything that is Omega. It’s unmistakably Omega from a mile away. 321 is better sized too.

PLUS

The 321 on bracket is so nicely finished, it has a jewelry quality to it, while ST1 is a nice watch. Every angle of that 321 on bracelet is stunning. 39mm is all day comfort.

BONUS

If you have kids or planning to pass this on; 39mm is unisex (actually looks freaking amazing on a woman, hence jewelry- quality comment above), while 42mm is almost strictly men.

stop being like me (a child) and wait for the 321 to arrive (which might take a while)

321 - 1957-1969 12 year run. first in space and on the moon.

861 - 1969 - 2021 a 52 year run. went around the moon, used for all Russian flights, used on STS program ( at least initially)

idk one has a bit more history to me.

I have both, suggest you keep the ST1, get the 321 and hold on the Rolex. ST1 and 321 don't overlap in a collection.

I'd keep the ST1...love that dial. Just curious, what configuration are you looking for on the Datejust? Smooth/fluted bezel, dial color, etc.

Suggest keeping the ST1 and picking up a '67 Speedmaster with a 321. Why go for a new imitation 321 when you can get the real deal?

“first in space and on the moon.” are significant scientific milestones. Those accomplishments defined Omega (and NASA) as a brand and has been Os tag line since forever, no?

While 861 has a longer run, 321 is in fact historically more important. Hence, its resurrection.

I say do the swap. No idea what an ST1 fetches at present, but if it is a straight swap or thereabouts I'd say the 321 is much nicer so go for it. Don't get me wrong the unique panda dial, radial numbers and brush finish make the ST1 streets ahead of most (all?) Speedy Pro case LEs but for me the straight lug is just a nicer thing to wear.

I may be swimming against the tide here, but as a former owner of the ST1 I hope my opinion has perhaps some worth. Of course maybe the best compromise is to keep the ST1 and buy a FOIS if you can stretch to it - it's a helluva lot cheaper and has a leather strap too, though maybe not as nice as the ST1 catch stitch.

41mm, fluted, jubilee, mint green. I have no idea honestly if I’ll actually get this watch even though. Best case sounded like sometime in 2023.

Hah! I wish! Though I did go down a rabbit hole thinking I wanted a vintage Sub. I came out realizing I did not have enough time and effort to educate myself completely in all that goes into purchasing luxury vintage. So I’ll have to admire from afar.

And you'll forever have to worry about finding a qualified repairer who can obtain whatever parts may be needed for maintenance of a vintage 321. With a new 321 you get a five year warranty and a movement that Omega Bienne will service for decades. Vintage can be a hassle in this regard.

Hmm, maybe. But in 5 years of ownership it has yet to be an issue. As with a car, once a watch is out of warranty I likely would not use the manufacturer for future maintenance/ repairs.
