I think the date works best at the top or bottom.

As an aside what is the center dial measuring on the Longines?
Now, this to me is the best looking 4 o'clock date in this thread, even though it's usually not my thing. Horizontal, not suspended.

Isn't that where people are buried?
As Jane Siberry once said "You can't cut down the symmetry"...
is it because of the round opening displaying the date that matches the sub-dials perfectly?
