The Worst Collecting Advice

Back in 1989 when I first started collecting, a local pawn shop owner said this:

Don't buy wristwatches, nobody wants them. Put your money into pocket watches, especially railroad watches. They're going up in value everyday.

I wonder what the reaction to this one will be ...

This isn't advice. This was a line from a conversation this weekend and, yes, I'll be seeing the watch this week with a view to buying. The line?

"I knew the dial had been re-done because it had holes in the lume"

(My reply: Holes all over or just at the 12 and 6? Yeah, one at the top and one at the bottom).

It's a one-owner SM300.

“Yes, the bezel is wrong, but you can find a correct replacement.”

Oh really? 🤦

This is the biggest lie! But behold one of the greatest miracles of my collecting career, before and after:

That $6k 2998, while all correct, is an unattractive bucket of bits.

“Trust me…I know, as I am an ‘expert’…this is the best offer you will get !! ( on whatever watch ) ”

And

Taking any advice on trust…without confirming other sources first …People always have a agenda…Sometimes it has little to do with loving, caring for, & appreciating vintage watches,… and more to do with their personal ego, & ‘self aggrandisement’

One famous man Paulie Walnuts once said.
"The framus intersects with the ramistan approximately at the paternoster."

Its always a good time to buy a watch...😁

"Don't buy them old watches, they always sound broken" - so called watch expert at the flea market, referring to bumper movements.

Here's one I fell for while making a trade (luckily it was still fair nonetheless):

"A scratch on the case is better than paint missing from a hand. You can just polish it out."

In reference to two modern Speedies. Looking back, it would be easier to have a watchmaker replace/repaint one subdial hand than refinish the case. As for the cape cod cloth self-polish option, no thanks.

'What do you need a watch for? You have an iPhone' 😕

Ouch, the harshest cut of all......

Don't take the sticker off your Role case back, it will lower the value.

This is actually true. The ones with the sticker remaining on the back sell for more money. Recently I’ve heard of some dealers requiring new buyers to take the stickers off stainless sport models before they leave the store in an effort to combat grey market sales (akin to the keeping of paperwork for a year that we’ve seen in the UK)
