What’s the worst advice you’ve ever heard (or given) with regard to collecting vintage watches? For me, it’s this gem, circa 2011: “Always buy the precious-metal version of a watch if you can, as it will always be worth more than the steel model.”
Well ... if one bops his watches with a hammer and then runs them over the scrap metal scales then the precious metal watches would be worth a little more. A little... "Never service the watch as long as it is currently "running right" and keeping good time." Told to me by a watchmaker who "specialized" in vintage watch repair.
Mine were: - Just go for watches that have in-house movements (this from a guy who had a Speedmaster 861, which he thought to be in-house) - Don't buy any Lemania 5100 because it has plastic parts - The only brand worth collecting is Rolex I didn't follow any of these "advice"
Among others: "Redialing is better so the watch will sell for more" "Give it a good polish, it will come out just as good as new" And "This watch's hands have been replaced; I can tell, I have sold Longines for 30 years." Hmmm...
Oh, another one; although not technically an advice. Someone told me that Rolex improved on Zenith's El Primero movement
Some Joe-shit-the-rag-man: “Ha, ha, ha...Seikos suck...they’re not worth collecting...ha, ha, ha!” Mad Dog: “Hey Mister Joe-EAT-shit-the-rag-man...EAT SHIT!”
„If it‘s scratched just send it to a watchmaker, he can polish it out! I polish all my watches! They look great afterwards!“
Hear it all the time to newbies "Check out the FS forum here." Way to go people, tell thousands of people you don't know with one post to scoop up great watches whilst your asleep.
"Buy it because it is a limited edition" - I take in the advice without thinking carefully if I really like the watch...
Wow, I’m so torn...(like an intelligent Metallica fan on listening to death magnetic for the first time) your intelocutor was so completely and perfectly right but you somehow won the argument and shalt have thy victory writ permanently upon the annals of time, like this dude
Related to watches in general, “get yourself some Cape Cod polishing cloths, will make the watch look like new!” Umm, no. Just don’t...
