One of my favorite places to hike near my home is the trails all around WSU-Vancouver Campus. My 6 year old and I hiked through the snow down to the nature trails around Mill Creek. It's currently just over 20F/-6C here, it was quite a bit warmer under the tree cover and away from the open air and slight wind. There's plenty of snow melt and the water is moving rapidly.

I love these trails, it's like a personal wonderland tucked away not that far from us. View attachment 1723001

It's 12 F (-11 C) here in central TX which is low for this part of the world. Texas has the most wind power of any state, 7 times that of CA, but the wind isn't blowing much this morning and it's cloudy so not much chance for solar power today. Wind/solar only providing 10% this morning, the other 90% by gas, coal and nuclear. We keep on truckin'.

The struggle is real, we humans have our heated homes with comfy floors when doing our deeds, but our poor little furry friends are having a tough go of it!

Our little blonde Shih-poo "Meeko" normally runs out the front door to do his business, it's the only place he goes, other than during twice daily walks (or "W's" when they're within earshot). Our little gray Shih-poo "Bentley" also runs out most days, but not these cold days.

Temps are -17 deg C (~1 deg F), we've tried jackets and booties, but they don't like them. Another week of this weather near Detroit, Michigan and then we'll get a much needed break from the cold-snap.

One thing I definitely don't miss about Houston is how unprepared it is for cold like this.

My daughter's in Austin and just called to say it's 26F there. That's rough when it was 70 a few days ago.

Hope you all stay warm. We just got our power back after couple days. 40 to 50 mph winds here and 85 mph winds up the Columbia Gorge, which is a chute that brings the winds to us. Pretty amazing to see trees 3 to 5 feet in diameter snapped or fallen over.

Not too many people tougher than linemen. They are out there working in a job that is already tough in the best weather.

This big Fir tree picked the only place it could fall without falling on somebody's house.
The only four lane East-West road in our little town near Portland.
There were actually two that crashed side by side.

Super glad to hear you got your power back on. I feel for both

Good to meet another PNW & "Portland area" native, and glad that tree didn't hit your home. 👍

We're more lucky than I realized. Just walked up to the park next to us. At least 24 trees down in our side of the hill. Hard to appreciate how strong those winds were.

This is the same tree. I am standing in the middle and spun 180 to take the picture:

I lived in Anchorage for about 4 years and Minnesota about 7 years. The freezing rain here in Portland is the worst driving (and walking) condition. Think ice skating rink with water surface. All you do is slide.

Edit: Ice bombs have started falling from the trees. They'll give you a real headache.

Yeah, the street here outside my home is a 3-inch thick ice sheet thanks to the freezing rain. I'm not going anywhere!

Past two days bad. We didn’t even get a lot but the ice caused havoc on the highway. Yesterday much worse today me and a couple other motorists tried to render a little aid at a 3 car bang up to one gentleman who appeared seriously hurt. Not much we could do basically try to talk calmly as emergency services made its way through the closed interstate. Snow is almost better than those ice layers many of which u can’t see. I just gave my name and exited as soon as the pros came I did have to take EMT training but I had nada with me that is for my job. Felt pretty helpless I hope our calm voices helped the poor guy.

Got home kinda cleaned my watches in a daze. Glad I have them for a distraction. Don’t want to take tomorrow off but I may have to if I do go in I picked a nice distracting watch for tomorrow. Really hope everyone is OK from those accidents.
