I just want to clarify here if that’s okay. Are you saying that you believe all black dial Aeros are incorrect?

There may be one out there that has somehow slipped the archives. But to date, I have yet to see it. So far, none on them are correct, yes.

I can’t agree with you here. These are rare configurations for sure but these dials are absolutely beyond doubt correct. Maybe my catalogue might convince you?

Firstly, let me state that I have a very special interest in aviation, not just watches but all things to do with aviation. In response to your question, yes, It would convince me but it has to be a UG publication that goes back to that era which I believe it is not. A catalogue produced by auctioneer is hardly a reference. I accept that It was common in back in the 40s to request particular dial configurations and colours. However, they were custom models usually produced by a re-seller. There are some genuine (very few) black dial early compax models but I have yet to see a genuine black dial aero. there is a lot of mis-information out there and it is sometimes very difficult to separate what is genuine from the pile of stuff that is not. Look at the aero-compax section in SALA. There are multiple examples of redials and strangely, there are no black aeros in the archive photographs. I had the chance to look through what is probably the most extensive early UG photo archive that exists (in private hands), a lot of what the reference photos you see in SALA, came from there. Sadly, as much as I would have wanted, there were no black dial areo-compax.

I'm not sure what you mean. The one I posted from Philips is an original dial, the one you posted looks like a redial. If anything, the probable redial you posted is based on the one I posted, not the other way around.

Anyhow I've seen numerous black dial aero that I don't have any reason to suspect. Many of them in Spillman cases. Not surprising that the UG catalog pic @Woops posted is for a Spillman. Doesn't Ben Clymer have a black dial aero spillman? (But I don't think they were exclusively in spillman faceted lugs cases).

Are you suggesting the catalog/brochure 22432 example above is fake?

There are tons of variants not captured in the archives photos across all the model lines, IMO the absence of a particular configuration does not necessarily mean anything.

You refer to a catalogue/brouchure. Who is the publisher ?

The lizard people 😜
This is a catalogue that was printed /published by universal geneve and given out to their retailers for sales, promotion & marketing. This catalogue was printed in 1942. I'll post up more photos of it later. Its printed by Universal for their sales force and you can find it printed in many languages French, German, English etc..

I thought so ...

It is a bit like the logo chronology published in a well known catalogue that claims the 1970-80 logo is 1960s (added on at a later date).

???

That image is from an original UG printed catalogue (images from eBay advert, not mine, discussed here on OF too).
Black dialed Aero Compaxes are rare, but definitely many are perfectly genuine and correct (and some, for sure, are redials).

Aero Compax with original black dials exist for sure ( with pump pushers or rectangular pushers ) ... over time I have seen some from collectors and dealers
This is mine ( I also opened a discussion in the U.G. section )
