I am so happy to add this one to my collection. It's been totally worth the 5 years wait and hunt. A keeper !

I contacted the seller again and asked if he can share anything about the watch and its story, here's what I've got back :

Unfortunately we won't know more about the story of this watch. I'm now looking forward to get the Extract from the Omega Archives. Hopefully something related to the Navy, fingers crossed 😀

Some follow-up on this one 😀

The extract arrived some weeks ago and unfortunately didn’t reveal anything exotic. The watch was produced on September 24, 1968 and obviously delivered to the USA.

Today I found a totally unexpected email in my mailbox, from the seller :

Jennifer, owner of the watch, just found some papers about it. I will be happy to send them to you. To give you a preview, it seems the watch was purchased on 10 June 1969. Please send your address again--easier than looking it up.

Now I am more than excited again, looking forward to see what Jennifer could find. Getting the original papers for this amazing watch is super exciting - how cool is that ! ::psy::

What a beautiful watch and background story. Bought by a naval aviator in 1969? Makes you wonder what that watch has seen/where it has been. Living piece of history right there...

Lovely watch- did I miss the part where you had it serviced after sitting for so long unworn? It looks like the screws havent been touched meaning the oils are either super old organic oils or dried out and grinding the parts to dust...parts that are no longer available...
Devils advocate again about servicing the movement in your awesome vintage watch!
It really is a beauty...colors more associated with a paul newman daytona

No you didn’t. I haven’t serviced it yet. Didn’t wear it much in the meantime so no worries about dry parts getting used 😉

The service is planned for later this year and it will be serviced by Romain from www.atelier-h13.ch who is the only person to care about all my vintage watches.

He already has several other watches from me pending service, this Seamaster will get there and will be worn afterwards. Don’t worry 😀

Now I am more than excited again, looking forward to see what Jennifer could find.

Finally Jennifer sent me a whole pile of documents from the early seventies.

It looks like the Navy LCDR. W. Austin had some troubles with his watch and had to return it to Omega in NYC for a warranty repair. I've got his letter to Omega as well as the letter he's got back confirming reception of his watch for repair. Nine months later, Mr. Austin was writing again to Omega asking if they're building a new watch for him 😁 a couple of weeks later, he got another letter in response confirming that his watch was repaired and on its way back to America, from Switzerland.

Besides that, I've got the warranty booklet, unfortunately not filled, but it doesn't matter - it's part of the package and it belongs to the whole story. 🥰

So cool that, months after getting my money for the watch, the owners' wife bothered getting back to me, asking for the shipping address again, and shipping me all the papers she found in the meantime 👍

What a satisfying result and I a wry smile rose crossed my face when I read that even back then there were problems getting a watch back from a service centre 🤦

I believe this story needed an update here as well.

As I already wrote, after owners wife found some more stuff related to the watch, I’ve got a second letter from the USA, containing all the papers and different letters J. W. Austin did write to his dealer as well as replies he got from them.

The watch remained untouched besides the movement service and (melted) gasket replacement.

All the bits are now united again and the set is simply amazing 🥰

They are still out there, guys ! Collector’s patience and perseverance get rewarded one day 😀

May 2021 bring you your personal collecting reward 😉
