A bit late to the party, but what a great update to the Ed white.

In regards to value, I think you generally see a division between pure collectors and others who are more interested in having a functional piece of history. In the end, I suppose the market will dictate what the market will dictate.

Fantastic, informative article!
May I follow it with a stupid question : So, the only reliable way to see if a vintage, say 50s-60s, watch has the original tritium dial/hands is to check under black light and not with a Geiger counter?

I have been thinking about for a while and having reread this I will go ahead with a relume on "our" 2998.5. As it stands it is ok but a bit tired , almost boring if a 2998 can be described as such. A little sympathetic lume colour might make all the difference .
Here is a before pic and I will post the result after a holiday at Lewis Watch Co.

OMG don't do that...
Thanks for your input, I was hoping for a reaction from the experts and I know you are one. My earlier hesistancy is now justified. Thank you, I will now reconsider thanks to your input.

I am not expert in anything but if I have to consider to relume a dial ( hands are different thing), it will be the very last solution if the lume is completely wash out or not appealing.. But in your case, if I understand well, it is just a matter of lume color ( you want something warmer right?) and your lume seems to be very nice and homogenous... Even if not very pronounced...
You have to know that a relumed dial ( Even if well done) will kill a lot of interest for any collectors..

While an excellent job like the OP can improve poor lume, I don't think is the case on your watch.
From the picture it looks uniform, stable and I'd say original. I would't touch it, and would buy it from you anytime 😉
Enjoy it!
