The Rest of the Story About That Crazy Auction

First, I’d like to apologize to any members for not being forthright about the fact that I was one of those crazy bidders and was bidding without knowing the reference number and movement number... didn’t want to be called crazy. I created the thread because I was in a bidding war with another collector and wanted to get your thoughts on the matter... which I did... thanks.

As Ndgal stated it’s a transitional and I will take it to a watchmaker this weekend to verify reference and movement and getting it serviced as I don’t know it’s history.

The watch itself came with the original box and papers minus the warranty and bill of sale. Also included were 5 pristine expansion links and the purplish backing that originally covered the caseback. The watch itself, for lack of a better word, is exceptional or excellent... and I believe Spacefruit, William, would agree. It winds like butter and everything functions as it should. I’d have to add 3 or 4 links for the bracelet to fit, but, I plan on putting the bracelet aside. The watch is in better condition then I thought and believe one in this condition is worth the price I paid.

WOW
Exactly what I said when I opened the box. The auction house photos did not do it justice. Also the smudge by 70 on the bezel insert is just dust.

that's a beauty, CONGRATS on your purchase. YOU are happy with it and so there's no need to explain your motives to anyone else.

Interesting. This puts the OP's posts in the previous thread in a different perspective. I'll need to go back and read it again. Like watching "The Sixth Sense" for the second time.

Sorry if I'm being rude, but what was the price of piece like this? I'm more into vintage Constellations and Seamasters and know nothing about Speedmasters but its obvious this one is in WOW condition.

Do you have a link to the crazy auction of which you speak?

Based on the title I thought it would be the Speedmaster with the red dial....

@Marsimaxam. It is indeed a fantastic example, congratulations. 👍

Just curious, when in the last thread did you decide to go for it? Before you posted the topic or after?

Both actually...but I was outbid and just didn't know if it was smart to increase my bid. I had checked online for values... saw a recent Sotheby's auction where a transitional ( not quite as nice ) went for 11,875 which included buyer's premium. So, I used that as my guide, thinking 10k is a fair bid. Well, I shot that bid to hell, and after reading what the members wrote on the thread, I realized there just aren't many transitionals out there in this condition and even Speedmaster 101 price chart states:
  • Remember also, exceptional watches will command prices off the chart – if a watch is especially attractive, then they will command a premium. A exceptional dial can add 100%. (Note: Exceptional)
I was a little surprised that I won as I was expecting the other bidder to outbid me as I was done bidding and didn't bid in the live auction. I knew the watch was in great condition, but in hand, it looks like something out of a time capsule.

Big congrats, @Marsimaxam. I've been on and off hunting for a transitional '68 for a couple years, so this is pretty much the dream example for a lot of us. Hope you enjoy it, as I'll be living vicariously through you.

Thank you. I have never bought a vintage watch in this condition and I have been collecting for many decades. I think I decided to live vicariously through myself.

I doubt you’ll ever regret paying what you did. Paying a bit more for an exceptional example is always better than paying a bit less for a mediocre one.

Congrats on the beautiful watch. “Pay tomorrow’s price for today’s watch” definitely rings true here.
