Meteorites.

My most prized meteorite specimen is from one that fell in Namibia, Africa, tens of thousands of years ago, and was discovered by a farmer around 110 years ago, while his ox was plowing the field.

Here's a view of the fascinating Widmanstatten pattern in my sample:

Panning out, we can see my sample of The 'Hoba' is only a thin slice, inserted into a piece of steel behind some sapphire. 馃榿

Here it is wrapped around a 1.2 kilo Campo del Cielo meteorite:

The original reveal thread, from March of 2015 (and a little more detail on the meteorites) is here:

For some reason, the meteorite collecting stopped at about that time...馃槜

Very nice and impressive!
But it appears that the meteorite is "dialed".

Following on from today's Time 4A Pint Podcast, in which @neilfrancis talks a lot about collecting things, other than watches, I was interested to hear what else people collect.

One of my things is Chirashi, small, high grade flyers that are handed out around film releases in Japan.

These are the kind of things that get thrown away... so for older films, harder to snag.

A few fun ones:

So, what, other than watches, do people here collect?

Respectfully, can we please keep this thread free of guns.

Hi Tyrantlizrdrex

I actually really like that idea of Chirashi - I had never heard of them before.

What are the "holy grail" ones to get?
Do you have to be careful of reproductions (like the early Star Wars ones)
How do you display them, or do you keep them in a folder?
Is there anything to be careful of when collecting them?

Thanks

I do have a pretty intense PEZ collection that was once featured in a museum but now it's in storage. My other passion, more prominently displayed, is an ever growing collection of Modern Library editions. I'm always on the lookout for ones with dust covers.

collections... I think people who collect have a gene which causes this strange affliction..... you collect, or you don't.... there doesn't seem to be middle ground.

so, having the affliction... I've got watches & clocks and damn near anything else with a dial....
and then there's the pens...

oh... and the motorcycles... they come and go, but several are still hanging about and number 31 has already been chosen.

I am an unwitting collector of Hot Wheels models of American Motors cars. My hobby car is an AMC, and my son picks up Hot Wheels models of many AMC cars whenever he finds them. Currently have about 20, and I display them on my dash, at car shows.

1- As I understand it, the older they are, the harder they are to find - the Star Wars set came from a guy I've dealt with quite a bit, and those took him 3 months to find for me, because I only wanted "Mint" grade versions.

2- I don't think people reproduce these... there's not profit to be made (or rather, not enough), typically they're $1-2 each, with some of the harder to finds bring up to $5.

3- All of mine are in folders...

4- Sane rules as collecting anything. There are always more, so buy the best ones you can... don't buy damaged!

One of the things that I started to collect in last years are watch cataloques. Becouse there are so many brands I limit myself on Patek, Rolex/Tudor, Breitling, Longines and of course Omega. I focus mostly on Omegas and this is what I have till now (got today 99 and 2000).

p.s. looking for 02-06 and older up to 99 if anyone have spare and want to expend my collection 馃榾.

I just bought two Empire Strikes back ones on eBay, to test it out. They were sent from Japan, and were well packed.
They seem absolutely mint - too good? They are also quite flimsy, almost like a very thin magazine type paper. they have no yellowing, creases etc. They just seem too perfect for a 40 year old item? They were about 拢5 including postage for the two, and the seller threw in a few others e.g. Rogue One and Guardians OTG.

What do you think the story is, are the Star Wars ones real, or a modern version, and how can you tell?

Also, any tips on the kind of folder to keep them in, to stop them getting damages, and so they can be looked at easily?

Thanks

Did you buy from John?

I'm 99% sure they're original... but clearly no way to be 100% sure. 馃槈

I have a few rexel acid free portfolios... Amazon/Rymans 馃槈

Yes - Those came from John, in Japan. Really well wrapped, almost seems like more effort for him to send than its worth. I have also bought some Episode 4, from a different dealer, but they have not arrived yet - see what you have me started with!!

I will check out Rymans at the weekend.

I saw these folders recommended -
Itoya A4 Profolio Display Book
- but at 拢25 or so, it seems excessive to house sheets costing 拢1 or 拢2 each.

Thanks again - they are good fun, and an easy to build inexpensive collection.
