early film cameras...

Im a filmmaker

I don't know about cameras, but I am intrigued by the following nearly minute-long piece created in the mid 1990's by David Lynch, using a Lumiere Brothers Cinematographe camera. Apparently, the short was part of a broader collaboration bounded by the following rules, which I reproduce from Wikipedia:

"Shorts were edited in-camera and constrained by three rules:
  1. A short may be no longer than 52 seconds
  2. No synchronized sound
  3. No more than three takes"
Warning, David Lynch content here:

Very cool...I had an opportunity to buy a Lumiere Bros camera in the 90's and passed because it was over $5,000. What a fool I was as its worth close to 100x that today. The Lumiere Brothers actually invented the first motion picture camera. In the US Thomas Edison is credited with this, yet he only bought/stole a later design and is most famous for his marketing methods. He tried to monopolize the industry and nearly succeeded. His later Home Kinetoscope was marketed just like the original Netflix...way ahead of its time but was also a failure.

That dissolve at 40 seconds was done in camera? Wow!

I collect vintage used Fixoflex metal bracelet. I started a couple of years ago and I am now the proud owner of more than a kilo of those lovely lug destroyers that have shaved hair on numerous arms.

If they are anything like the last one I had to cut off there is enough DNA there to clone a few granpas

They have been here on OF but here are a bunch - again. Check the list above and tell me if there is something you would like to see especially.

Following on from today's Time 4A Pint Podcast, in which @neilfrancis talks a lot about collecting things, other than watches, I was interested to hear what else people collect.

One of my things is Chirashi, small, high grade flyers that are handed out around film releases in Japan.

These are the kind of things that get thrown away... so for older films, harder to snag.

A few fun ones:

So, what, other than watches, do people here collect?

Respectfully, can we please keep this thread free of guns.
why Japanese ones? you live in Japan?

I've found them on the bike thread/s! Wonderful collection, @styggpyggeno1 (Hope you didn't think I was being rude there, disappearing suddenly in mid-thread, only it was late here and now I am up early for a ride.)

Question. Funds become 'available'. First thought: bike or a watch? Or indeed, something else?

If funds become "available"... My first thought would be - "How did this happen?" 😉
After that it is only a matter of time - and depending on what opportunity that would come up first. As I have almost no limitations in room for bikes/watches that is not really a limiting factor. What might shine thru in some of my writings is that I do, from time to time, sober up and wrestle with myself when it comes to the sheer madness of collecting. Why I do it and so on. I do not "need" anymore - bikes or watches. It is solely the hunt, the quest, it is about. A distraction from everyday life. A "place" to rest in. As my life has turned to calmer waters since some time I still hunt but not in the same feverish pace as earlier and "the kill" (the buy) is not as important any longer. But there is still the occasional "too nice to ignore bike/watch" deal going down now and then.

I do have an exit plan as I realize this whole thing is ridiculous and it (and/or I) cannot go on forever. Start selling stuff at retirement and spend the money on travelling the world together with my wife. That is the simple plan. Retireing in about 9 years (planning to go at 62) and that notion has started taking its toll on my conscience when buying stuff. Why buy when soon going to sell...?
