I think boxing and break dancing are both out in 2028.
Yes, looks like breaking is out and boxing would need to get its act together.

Interesting to see everyone’s thoughts, reactions, and complaints here.

I was at a place watching Manchester United and City. The bartenders turned it off for the USA / Brazil gold medal game. What a reaction from everyone there and the tvs were switched back. Somehow the bartenders survived the day.
USA vs Brazil was a barn burner. The crowd would have seen a compelling game.

Interesting discretionary sports included by the LA28 committee:

New:
- Flag football
- Squash

Returning:
- Lacrosse
- Cricket
- Baseball/softball

And modern pentathlon will be modified, with an obstacle course replacing the equestrian jumping.

So it’s basically a bunch of college quad sports.

Hope they include hackey sack and bong rips as well.

Clearly you're trolling, since only flag football could remotely fit into that category.

I second the suggestion!

"Oh, he trying very hard to suppress a cough, but I'm afraid that it is likely to prove a losing battle..." 😁

Well climbing and breakdancing don’t seem like Olympic sports to me for a start.

There have been plenty of Olympic sports that are not "traditional" sports. Many sports have come and gone in the modern Olympics, like rope climbing, tug of war, pistol duels using wax bullets, etc. How about poetry? That was among 5 artistic events first held at the 1912 Olympics - dubbed The Pentathlon of the Muses, which were contested for close to 40 years before being dropped.

Maybe we should be more traditional and only have events that were in the original ancient Olympics then? If so, then bring on the mule cart and chariot racing, along with foot races with men dressed in battle armor and carrying shields. And don't forget the Harold and Trumpeting contest.

Maybe to be traditional we should only allow Greeks to compete, as the original games did. Should we be doing all this only in praise of Zeus?

It seems many see the Olympics as some rigid formula that if anything is added that doesn't meet that formula, it somehow isn't right. The truth is very different - the Olympics started out with 1 event - a foot race. It expanded over time just like the modern Olympics have. Change is inevitable if the event is to survive, and not all sports will remain. Breaking has already been dropped for LA, so we'll have to see if it comes back - some sports do that, such a baseball/softball.

I don’t get the Snoop dog appeal, but apparently NBC is pleased with the ratings to warrant his 7 mil fee (500k/day).
I am continually reminded that the world is no longer focused to appeal to my early boomer generation. 🙁

It would be foolish for the Olympics to cater to that specific generation, because it would be a recipe for death for the Games.

I enjoyed breaking, and now I might be more inclined to find its channels in future, so good job Paris and (OK I'll say it) IOC.

But boxing? Out? - how did it come to this? Goodness knows, the IOC has not always been completely admirable, but the IBA needs a hard look in the mirror.

Most likely this is why it was dropped from the Olympics in the 20th century.

Boxing might get added back if an organization is formed before early 2025 to replace the Russian controlled, and banned, IBA. Right now boxing is a mess.

It already exists - World Boxing. It just hasn't yet been through the full process of being accepted by the IOC as the IF for boxing.

IBA is so corrupt that even the corrupt IOC thinks it's too much.

True, but there are some powerful IBA members who haven't signed on to World Boxing. They either rely on the IBA for financial support or align themselves politically with Russia. As usual politics and money are a big driver. Maybe they can work things out for 2028.

If the IOC recognizes WB, it doesn't matter if some countries don't get on board - they will just be left out of the Olympics. Once an IF is designated, if your countries NF is not a member of the IF, you don't get to play, period.

Unfortunately, this might juts be the case.

As I understand it, one of the main reasons that WB is struggling to replace the IBA is that Gazprom provide large purses for fights under the IBA. (and I'm sure other financial support too)
Unless WB can match these purses then individual countries may not get on board with WB.

The IOC could nominate WB as the governing body but if WB doesn't have a large number of NFs on board, boxing could be a hollowed out sport as far as the Olympics are concerned.

At the moment Russia would happily put a stick in the spokes of the IOC and take messed up Olympic boxing as a win.
