·The Obama Bubble Back
There was an article on Hodinkee about the President’s visit to Cool Vintage Watches on July 30th 2014.
“One highlight since John opened the store was a surprise visit from President Obama on July 30th of this year. President Obama was in Kansas City to give a speech and on his way out of town stopped by Parkville Coffee next door to CVW. The Secret Service told John that the President may stop by his shop, but after President Obama spent about 30 minutes in the coffee shop, they told John that he could come stand outside the door to shake the President’s hand, but that he should not invite the President inside the store as he was behind schedule. John did just that and the President came by to shake John’s hand – then the President noticed the vintage watches sign and said to his Secret Service detail, "Sorry guys, I have to go in and see these."
President Obama came in, browsed the store and chatted with John and even tried on a watch that caught his eye – a Rolex Bubbleback with a black luminous dial no less, and it is still for sale (more below). President Obama was wearing his usual Jorg Gray Secret Service chronograph (more on that here).” Hodinkee
I am not a bubble back collector but always liked their classic good looks and proportions, so gave John a call and the watch was on its way.
It is really rather small, compared to the watches I usually find on my wrist. I am not certain if I will keep this in my wearing rotation. It might very well grow on me.
