The next big wish - chronograph with GMT/second time zone

It's a Ref. 176.007.

While it does have a 24h hand (well... disc), it is not possible to set this independently, so it's not a second timezone.

... but it's one hell of a cool watch!

Ah right, so it's like the MkIV and Mk4.5 in that sense? Sadly it doesn't make the shortlist.

A GMT with chronograph functions?

I can't offer an Omega but ... if you want a few extra complications ... worldtimer, slide rule, diver timer ... and certainly not an "everyday" watch ...

Well that is a pretty thing and no mistake. With the addition of a battery that could ace so many "new-fangled" watches. I'm not sure I could handle the strap but you're obviously proud of it.

This is a watch that you can't simply wear, instead you need to "own" it. You celebrate its flaws (of which there are many) and flaunt its colour scheme ... hence the strap choice. In fact, as you may have guessed, the strap is a custom made, never repeated, piece.

Allow me to demonstrate:

Not only that, but they managed to squeeze 17 jewels between the rivets of the movement!

I use a Glycine Airman GL0064. The GMT can be set independently and with the rotating bezel you can even do a 3rd time zone.

The Airman is a great suggestion, though it's not a chronograph. Still, the classic design of the reissue models is a huge plus and now that they're making them in slightly more attractive sizes (40mm) it's definitely an option.

Well it surely is, but not for me as I'm looking to add a chrono with GMT.

I'd love that Sinn 6000 if it was a little larger than 38.5mm. Looks spectacular on that black leather strap.

I've just tried to watch an online review of the Omega Speedmaster HB-SIA Co-Axial GMT but lost interest firstly with the description of the strap taking up the first half of the review (it may be fascinating but I've not searched for a review of a strap - get to the watch fella!) and then, well the whole raison d'etre of this model was just not what I was expecting: meh!

Another option that occurred to me once I realized that the Airman is a 24-hour watch (which I don't want) is that the new Autavia has a rotating 12hr bezel, which can be easily used to track a second timezone. No GMT function though.

They're nasty thick, but a slim NATO helps, and the truth is that while TAG is a directionless mess, they can still make a mesmerizing dial. $3500 all day on the secondary market

Mesmeric indeed. Thick i can cope with; one to look at I fancy. Thank you.

Hmm. This is proving quite tricky.

The Autavia 02 set the cat among the pigeons.

Even though it fails the GMT hand requirement, the combination of stunning looks and that 12 hour dial (which would provide the second time zone reference always assuming that it does rotate and isn't fixed) started to tug at my sleeve.

Then I picked up on a sale at Ernest Jones in the UK where it is currently on offer with/without 0% finance at the discounted price of £2980, a saving of £1270. Oo-err! [edit] But wait... it's a homage to a vintage piece and I have vintage chronos so, other than that bezel why do i need a homage, right?

Then the brochure which I'd ordered from Sinn arrived and today presented an opportunity to plough through. There are plenty of models suffixed St which is the Sinn designation for second time zone using a GMT hand and only one part of the very extensive range, the Frankfurt Financial District Series 6000 and 6099 offer both a 12-hour bezel and a GMT hand. Now what?

So, right now I'm fighting the urge to snag an Autavia 02 @ £2980 with the extra perk of 0% finance and to look a little more widely at GMT chronographs with a 12 or 24 hour bezel: maybe in the Seamaster range?

Never before have I had such mental turmoil in not buying a watch.

The bezel does rotate (that was a key feature of the original Autavia, and so TAG at least didn't drop the ball in that area).

I'm leaning towards the Autavia - the Maen looks great, ticks all the boxes - but for me a watch must evoke something, and the Maen evokes nothing. The Autavia speaks to my enthusiasm for sports car racing - it says something more concrete. Extra important if it's the watch I'm traveling with IMO. Still, might look into the Maen when it drops.

As for pricing on the Autavia - that sale price is pretty cheap to be sure, but keep an eye out on eBay or WatchRecon as they're really cheap on the secondary market.

+1 on the Autavia. Tried one on last week at the local AD and was shocked at how well it wore relative to it's 42mm size, I have a 90's Carerra that's 42 and I never wear it as it just feels huge. The Autavia made my list and like @abrod520 said, they pop up on the used market with full kit for under $3k US

Thanks, I did expect the bezel to rotate but, as they say "check twice....cut once"

Like any other watch, I need to be sure the Autavia will "fit in" with my other watches and I can consider that almost done: it's the "period look but not period piece" that I need to be less squeamish about. Whether it'll prompt a little displacement activity? probably so but it's hard to see where.

The Maen? Yes you're right and fwiw I'm tracking an ebay listing for a quartz Autavia lookalike right now but have no desire to bid on it.

Autavia pre-owned prices? Well tody I've seen one at £23NN so it is something in my mind.

Elsewhere? Well Chopard have some of the Mille Miglia range sporting 3 subdials and a settable GMT hand but why do I feel that somehow Chopard isn't so much a serious brand but more of a fashion item? I just tried their website and backed out in frustration.

In Omega, well I keep coming back to Flightmasters......
