On July 21st, 1969, the Omega Speedmaster became the Moonwatch. Before that, it was “just” the chronograph that astronauts used onboard the spacecraft and during their spacewalks. It ascended to the legendary status it holds today after rigorous testing. Understanding exactly what the Speedmaster went through to reach this level is fascinating. RJ - Would it be possible to provide the sub-reference (e.g. 105.012-65) for the Speedmasters of the moonwalkers - TIA ... Below is what I gathered but there are probably errors: Apollo 11: Neil Armstromg - 105.012-65 - (not worn on the moon) https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-armstrong-apollo-11/nasm_A19731247000 Buzz Aldrin - 105.012-65 Apollo 12: Alan Bean - 105.012-66 CB - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-bean-apollo-12/nasm_A19771174000 Pete Conrad - 105.012-65 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-conrad-apollo-12 Apollo 14: Alan Shepard - 145.012-67 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-shepard-apollo-14 Edgar Mitchell - 145.012-67 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-mitchell-apollo-14 Apollo 15: James Irwin - 105.012-65 - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-irwin-apollo-15 David Scott - 105.012 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-scott-apollo-15 Apollo 16: Charles Duke - 105.012-66 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-duke-apollo-16 John Young - 105.012-66 ? - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/gasket-chronograph-young-apollo-16 Apollo 17: Gene Cernan - 105.003-64 ? - https://omegaforums.net/threads/gene-cernans-speedmaster.91891/ , movement serial number 22.089.xxx per https://www.worldoftime.de/data/cms_data/files/6887018b54652924432c4e168ae869a3.pdf ? and 105.012-66 CB - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-cernan-apollo-17 Harrison Schmitt - 105.012-66 CB - https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-schmitt-apollo-17 Edited: for Alan Bean’s 105.012-66 (added CB) and Gene Cernan’s 105.003 (added OF’s thread) per @g-boac ’s comment below. Thanks!
The Apollo 12 Alan Bean looks like a 105.012-66CB with clearly visible CB facets and distinctive lug shape in both photos. Apollo 17, the issued watch Gene Cernan wore EVA on the outside of the suit is the 105.012-66CB, and this is what is shown on the NASM page that you linked to. Established on OF here about a year ago on one of the threads discussing the return of the 321 was that Gene Cernan also brought a 105.003 and wore it during his lunar EVAs, but on the inside of his suit. I apologize that I cannot locate this thread on OF at the moment. I believe the Apollo 17 Gene Cernan 105.012-66CB, which (to this date) is the Last Speedmaster on the Moon, is out on loan from the NASM and on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum, aboard NAS Pensacola: https://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/exhibits/moon-rock-cernan-watch/ Thank you for compiling and posting these NASM links!!! Great photos and fascinating to visit.
@g-boac You're correct about Eugene Cernan wearing the NASA-number #28 Speedmaster 105.003 underneath his Apollo A7LB spacesuit during about 22 hours of lunar EVA's on Apollo 17... Cernan also wore this chronograph on Gemini IX and Apollo 10 Here's the current display of his " lucky charm " Speedmaster at the renewed Omega museum in Bienne ; .
It was last July 20th, 2019 when mine followed me home. The deployant strap came a few weeks later. A retirement present to myself.
