I recently acquired this Monodate Automatic from a well-known friend of the show. Rose gold 37mm dated to around 1950. The finish and elegance of the case is particularly striking.

Amazing piece! Wear it in best of health!

Awesome piece, and glad to see it landed "among us" from our mutual friend. Enjoy - she's a stunner!!!

I was both surprised and delighted to be the only bidder on this one.

I am surprised as well! Great watch, congrats - does the fur belong to a Basset Fauve de Bretagne by any chance @Carlton-Browne ?

No, it belongs to a Flying Terrier Mix.

He may include bits of Cairn, Irish and Australian. There may be others.

35mm. I first thought it might be plated but I think it's stainless; I'll get the back off later. Case reference is 31302 and serial 1516136 - probably 1951.

31302 means chrome ?

There's a mono with the same case number on eBay right now (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Un...315896?hash=item2acbd451f8:g:lhIAAOSwQFZbg6GJ) with a shot of the inside case back saying "Nickel Chrome".

The case of your example is in such good shape though that it really does look like stainless. No wear/pitting whatsoever. Absolute beauty 👍

I think that's your answer then (sorry - I haven't had the caseback off yet) - I'm also pleased I paid quite a bit less than the linked Monodate.. The case really is nice and sharp.

It's keeping good time - the only issue is the date changes over at 9pm. It will be going off for a service at some stage but I think I'd like to pick up a spare movement in the interim.

The first number in the Reference number is the case material - UG used a 3 to represent chrome or nickel plated during this period.

agreed. same as with every UG model. 1= 18 k gold, 2= steel, 3 = chrome plated, and so on.

I believe they changed/updated their "coding" system in 1965, where 3 then referred to solid white gold.
They seem to have applied the same system/s across their entire range.

A rough summary from a polerouter perspective (e.g. no polerouters were in chrome/nickel plate so it hasnt been included):
https://universalgenevepolerouter.com/decoding-polerouter-reference-numbers/

You should be able to extend these coding systems to the entire model range.
