Did anyone realise that this watch was originally sold for $1,099? Obviously the crystal has been changed to a new one.

What?

Let me say that again...

What?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-BEAUTI...CHRONOGRAPH-/291553228959?hash=item43e1ed389f

This is already at twice was they went for a year and a half ago. Lunacy, I say!

$4,200 with 3 days to go? The madness....
It must be the DON effect 馃榾
Seriously though, nobody blinks an eye when someone pays a lot more than that for a beat up 145.012 that could be found for half that not too many years ago, so why the big surprise when values of good examples like this one are rising.

@vinn2 might be referring to the 'shill' bidding that goes on, on eBay frequently. Someone the seller knows (or another ID of the seller's) makes sure to bid the price up until it's beyond anyone's reach...馃槻

I hope not!
This is my auction and my watch.
My auctions start at 99p usually and I have proved before to other forum members calling "shill" that it is not the case.
The paranoia that surrounds auctions surprises me. If I was a shill bidder the moonphase tri compax UG I sold recently would have certainly been shill bid, If I knew it was going to go for that I would have rather held on to it. The watch is going to Hong Kong and has been paid for, if the buyer is reading this and wants to chip in please do so. I also recently lost around 拢1000 on a Heuer 2446 I sold on eBay too so no shill bidding here 馃憤
The only time I will relist a watch is if the buyer does not pay, I will then put that buyer on my blocked bidder list.
My reputation is more important than the watches I sell.

It also surprises me that UG enthusiasts start whinging when certain watches achieve good prices, surely they should be happy?
Thanks Michael

I've been lucky on flips a couple of times myself, and not so lucky often. Don't quite get why we just jump into conspiracy theories off the bat. I'm.sure We would all love to make a profit like this on our watches.
Congratulations to the seller.

@michael e is a straight and honest seller.

He finds good watches, prepares them sympathetically and with full disclosure. THAT is the reason his auctions fly, not shill bidding.

He produces nice things to buy, and presents them in a way that clearly appeals to everyone, perhaps a wider audience than usual.

What I especially admire is that he does this under our very noses! The lots are often sourced on eBay. Very sharp.

I am fed up watching insubstantial allegations leveled against someone who has always behaved beyond reproach.

I have been a victim of shilling, And it is despicable. This word should not be used without evidence and especially not against someone who has proved his integrity time and time again in this very forum.

Good catch, man! Can't say anything against you.

About your last comment, though - I don't think anybody becomes happy when watches they love become more expensive. They don't sell - they only buy!

I buy too 馃榾 watch enthusiast first, dealer comes second, I pay the bills then whenever I get some spare cash I will buy myself a watch.

I am in the process of saving up for a couple now, a nice IWC MK11 and a 2913, prices have gone up seriously over the last few years, it gives me a buzz that these watches are valued and are going up in price, it just means the vintage watches we love and have already collected over the years are proving to be a good investment too. Prices today will also probably seem cheap in the future.

Glad you stepped in. People are way too fast to call "shill bidding" on this forum, with zero evidence whatsoever. I'll probably be accused of "shill posting" now.

ebay is a bit of a funny place.

lots of things go on and they are very difficult to spot. i don't really like this bidding lark and tend to go for BIN's and maybe make a very reasonable offer if I really like something. When I go for an auction, i will set my ceiling and that it, if it goes above then goodbye. On plenty of occasions I have seen items back on the market. That can raise suspicion and ring alarm bells. However, saying that, there are plenty of buyers that bid for fun rather than to buy so seller is left holding the baby (instead f a nice wad) ...

There are at least three examples I know of in equally good condition so although rare, they do come up every now and then (two in last year). The price this particular compax has reached so quickly has surprised me (and many others). It is rather satisfying to see such demand and can only make one wonder what his rare birds may go for if auctioned. Saying that, many serious bidders wait for the last moment or place auto bids. I am eager to see what the hammer price will be ....

Shame, it would have looked good on my wrist 馃檮 !

I feel like Hodinkee's Bring a Loupe doesn't really bring up some unique or under the radar watches like they used to when Eric Wind was there. I remember everytime my notification popped up about Bring a Loupe or What's Selling Where, I just dropped whatever I'm doing and went straight to the website. But now I probably just see it the next day.

Their stuff are quite mainstream and you can find it yourself with just regular notifications on your search engines.

The good part of Eric not writing Bring a Loupe any more is none of my "watched" lots have been published since then... I remember at least 4 lots which I was bidding on skyrocketing since Eric published then in Hodinkee.

thats a good answer; just buy, dont sell. or, buy and sell "eye to eye" with a hand shake
