The Hodinkee effect

I’m not a big Hodinkee hater like many are. I like a lot of what they do but agree things have been going astray for awhile. But this really had me shaking my head. I really really don’t need dink merch.
They have found their niche as a lifestyle concierge- watches were the beginning of that.
What that basically means is people without imagination and taste- but have money- and want to look like they have imagination and taste can pay for the pleasure of having their lifestyle curated for them. It’s a brilliant concept that JCrew has been doing for the last 15 years, but Dinky has aimed it at a clientele a notch more snobby and far more out of touch (JCrew shoppers were at least heritage brand savvy and knew what they were buying).

With that said- here is my take on their new collection:

Oh yea, the Field Notes killed me. That's just what the world needs. Another custom branded Field Notes set. I actually subscribed to their quarterly magazine last cycle because I like things in print and figured I'd give it a shot. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and stickler for details so I was a bit underwhelmed with one typo (that I noticed), one incorrect beat rate listed (it was a El Primero, come on we all know they run at 5hz), and a full page pixelated low-rez image that somehow made it to print. Also, an awful profile of Aurel Bacs that left me confused about wtf I just read and a watch newbie ranting about how deployant clasps are apparently the devil's work. I give it one more shot and then I cancel. Maybe I'm being overly critical. I did enjoy the images and history of the Daytona and a guest piece by a dad going watch shopping for his kid's first watch.

But then, sometimes they do something actually cool, like this overview of vintage Heuer: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/reference-points-tag-heuer-carrera
This hit my inbox the other day and I'm looking forward to watching it later tonight. That's one thing I think they get mostly right is their great video content.

Also, is it too political to dislike Jack Forster for promoting TCM? I feel like there's a similar underlying snake oil logic to TCM and building hyped up lifestyle brands.

I would be suspicious whether Hodinkee actually sold the watch in the first place.
Why is that?

No way. Not $30k. There’s a guy here selling an all original one for $18500.
This Timmins hillbilly has fine taste in autos. I would rock both of those.

I always find Rolex bashing entertaining because they are assholes and deserve every negative word. But Dinky has taken laughability to a new level.

You guys are way late. This accessory move is already openly mocked on their site! Yea very R. Peterman…..Still their ability to move watches for good prices is impressive.

Not sure what TCM is but I like Jack. Him leaving Hodinkee was a huge loss for them.

Before he worked in this field, he was a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner... Which, sorry for getting political here, is utter quackery.

"I'm so embarrassed to be wearing this stupid hat, I won't show my face."

Great marketing. 👍

Worthy of five out of five hats.

Yeah, but I don't see WatchBox blowing up with his content much either. I've gone to listening to The Grey NATO instead of hodinkee podcasts. I like James Stacy.

It's not just his content. Jack was like the adult in the room over at the Dink. I think they benefited a lot from his expertise and experience. I've never read a single thing from the WatchBox. I'm just glad I found this place. I've been enjoying learning about the vintage stuff way more than hearing about whatever new release I'll never be able to afford just came out.

I used to watch their shorter review videos, some of the longer interviews that were done were very cool too. I'm just surprised to not see as much being pushed to the top of the algorithm yet. Maybe I'll have to make a more concerted effort to pay attention to WB and Jack. I really enjoy his perspective on Life, The Universe, and Everything.

I’m assuming they paid a lot to bring him over so I hope it works out for all of them. Just maybe don’t take any of his medical advice…
