Here go with a quick snap. I too like these watches "just because I do" and find myself with feelings of apathy toward other Speedmasters; I can't help it.
Do I want a Mk3? Yup.

Like the flightmaster, the Mark 3 can come in either finish. My Mark 3 has the horizontal finish:

oh, thank you!
Flightmaster comes originally with horizontal finish only in last reference .036.
How can I presume that horizontal finish is original in Mark3? Perhaps about production year?

I haven't yet determined if there is a way to pinpoint when a Mark 3 should or should not have one finish or the other.

Love Mk IIs. Two altogether in my collection over the years. And both . . .

[first Mk II, '07]
[second Mk II, '17]

. . . were gifts.

Flightmaster .036 would should have been produced after 1972.
Your Mark 3 prepro should have been produced before 1974.
So, may we suppose that Omega used circular finished cases for Mark 3 in 1973 (34.xxx.xxx serials)?

Maybe, seems plausible to me. I just have a strong suspicion that if one were to do the research there won't be a definitive line in the sand where you can say for certain that a given serial range or production date range should have a certain finish.

My contribution: Mark 4.5 (cal 1045) with blue soleil dial (ref. 176.0016). Serial points to 1974, still keeping good time (+3s/day), crystal got a few scratches but the case is unpolished.

My Mark II, with papers dating it to my exact birthday in ‘77. (Yes…it clearly sat in the store for awhile before being sold). I’m the 2nd owner, with some restoration work by Tanner @ TMWatch Co when I bought it. It was in pretty rough shape but Tanner did a great job bringing it back to life.
