The catholic church is worth around 30 billion dollars, I think they should pay for their own bloody church to be fixed.
Were I a French taxpayer, I'd not want one Euro of my taxes to pay for the reconstruction. Private money only.

Rebuilt with products bought from China and tools also from China by construction workers wearing cloths made in Bangladesh, no doubt in today’s society 😉
EXACTLY! This is a terrifying thought...

It is owned by the French Ministry of Culture, not the Catholic Church.

Part of the reason why Notre Dame was/is in such a bad way is because of a dispute over who is responsible for its upkeep. The government owns the building but the church is responsible for its upkeep. The question that causes the argument is what does that upkeep include or cover. Some say paying the regular type bills and others maintenance is included.
Personally I have always had mixed feelings about Grand churches, on the hand they are very impressive and culturally important buildings on the other hand, the money could be better used for helping the needy.

Once you / your civilisation has gone stuff is all that is left. Everyone raves about the pyramids and the colosseum but they don't argue much about Pharaoh or Emperors social policies. These days they would have been disbarred for a socially unacceptable tweet when they were 15 before the building even started ….but everyone is happy to go along and say how wonderful they are as monuments... It is about time there was a boycott on visiting these vile examples of exploitation.....culture / watch collecting anyone.....:0)

That is a good point, I suppose the reason is because it happened so far back it is difficult to comprehend/ relate to what life might of been like for your average Joe Bloggs back then.

I will happily wear my feat of horologic engineering (properly understood) while visiting a feat of human engineering (properly understood) 😁 .

I've read about the suggestion to replace the wood with modern materials of glass and steel and composites to replace the roof and make it a more open, lighted experience. I think this would be beautiful. I've been to so many cathedrals in europe and wished the same thing in each...I wish they weren't so dark and dreary. I think its an opportunity to celebrate humanity and bring light to the magnificent structure.

I think you make a vaid point Wryfox! Make the roof, and all the interior walls of glass so the churches are lighter and more open???.... I think the Choirboys might be a bit safer with no dark side rooms
Anyway...I think I've seen the kind of Cathedral you are describing. You'll be pleased to know they already exists!👍..... It's called a 'fakkin' shopping mall! 😁

That was the concept behind the design of the rebuilt Reichstag in Berlin with its glass cupola. In that case it was to make politicians visible to the public and enable them to look down on the politicians in their place of work.

I did not know that... Well then I guess some government support is perhaps warranted.

We have a similar thing in the UK 'House of Commons' it enable members of the British public to have a look at what they get up to. I think the sign of free democracy is when you can look down on the government and show the incompetent 'basstedz' your arse.

I think that is actually a shot of the serving members...………….. found naked except for a pair of stockings and suspenders, with an electrical flex tied around his neck, a black bin liner over his head and an orange in his mouth...… Little Britain lives on … "on entering the room, my clothes accidentally fell off"....Sir Norman Fry enjoys my full confidence.....

Agree with everyone's sentiment here that it is sad to see monuments of such significance go up in flames for, most probably, an avoidable reason. The below article copied from The Times, if accurate, is an indictment on politicians and bureaucrats. It will be interesting to find out whether the timber roof structure was sprinklered and smoke detectors were installed:State’s decades of neglect blamed for Notre Dame’s destruction

Trying to find some positive from this terrible event Macron has had a very bad run in recent months and France has been struggling economically with some civil unrest. Notre Dame was underfunded and it is very expensive to work around, preserve, maintain and repair old masonry and wood which is legally protected / of great historical importance and in a bad state of disrepair. Now Macron has had a chance to look presidential and unite the county in grief. There was no loss of life and the timing of the fire just before a major religious festival has helped maximise benefactor donations. The works should be quicker and cheaper now they are working from a clean sheet cleared back to bare the walls making a five year plan possible. In some respects, the timing could not have been better...

Construction workers will probably be from Eastern Europe and North Africa. French workers are too expensive, only work 4 hours a day, 4 hour lunches and strike 4 months a year.

The fire was a good thing for the building. It slowly turned into a ruin because of disrepair and lack of funding as discussed. But now the world woke up and suddenly 900 million euros were donated.

Oh, just kidding about the French... 😀

I used to joke with a friend of mine about “French smoke”. I can no longer do that.

Apparently a priest known for previous acts of courage rushed into the blaze multiple times to rescue holy objects, including the crown of thorns.
