ยทJanuary 2021, Omega presented the new co-axial 3861 Master Chronometer Speedmaster chronographs...
A logical & extensive update of the Speedmaster as the new META movement ensures the future with an Omega Speedmaster for a new generation of Speedmaster/Spaceflight fans who prefer a brand new wristwatch.
โ
But we all know that, in November 1964, NASA received the type Speedmaster 105.003-63 chronographs to be tested, and by March 1965 these caliber 321 Speedmasters flew onboard Gemini III ... by June 1965 onboard Gemini IV with the now historical EVA - spacewalk by Edward White.
Moreover, between 1969 & 1972, the caliber 321 was worn on the lunar surface, in the form of type Speedmaster 105.003, 105.012 and even 145.012...
All together, astronauts spent 300 hours on the lunar surface, of which 83 hours lunar spacewalk time, collecting 380 kilograms lunar samples & rocks... while wearing their trusty Omega Speedmaster caliber 321 chronographs!
โ
This year it will be 50 years ago that events triggered Omega HQ to reach out to the Russian Spaceflight program, resulting in the fact that several Omega wristwatch models were spaceflown onboard (Soviet-) Russian Soyuz missions.
In December 1974, cosmonaut Anatoli Filipchenko wore the first regular Speedmaster caliber 861 chronograph worn on a Soyuz mission... Of course, the Speedmaster caliber 861 chronograph had already been worn in lunar orbit on the wrist of Apollo 17 CMP Ron Evans in December 1972...
Moreover, in December 1977, the Russians wore Omega's design for the ultimate spacewatch, the Speedmaster Alaska II project, which was an improved caliber 861 chronograph with an extra outer case.
โ
By 1997, Omega introduced the caliber 1861 ... and although the analog-digital Omega Speedmaster X-33 had already been flown in space (February & September 1996 on space shuttle orbiters Columbia & Atlantis) this new caliber 1861 Speedmaster has been used by both American & Russian spacefarers.
Although it's difficult to know when precisely this was done for the very first time...
In April 2000, Soyuz TM-30 cosmonaut Aleksander Kaleri wore the last "regular" Omega Speedmaster to the Mir space station, but it's very likely the first caliber 1861 Speedmaster only made it to space in the 21st century !?
The answer is probably on these MoonwatchUniverse notes' pages ๐
