Swiss Watches vs Casio? Same function, 100x price?

Haha! All the classic debates brought up in one place. My favorite is the assertion that no one under 40 even wears a watch. I'm 27 and bucking that trend. Another goodie is saying its "nothing more than a fashion statement."

Funny how disparate social cultures and opinions can be.

Yeah right, and Mr. Bean wasn’t each and every one of the Beatles?

I wear nice watches because they harken back to a more genteel time. To say that art and craftsmanship still mean something.

Omg I've been wrong my entire life.

Sweat pants and plain t shirts from now on. I'm selling my M3 to buy a used base model Toyota.

Yep! Haha

I would love to see what they spend their money on.

Sweat pants and a plain t-shirt though, that’s too frivolous and a waste of money. I fashioned pants and a shirt out some paper bags I found. They provide the same function as a pair of cheap Costco jeans and a shirt, but I’m smarter because I’m not wasting my money. And, nobody under the age of 40 wears jeans and plain t-shirt.

iPhones I’d wager. 😀 Or anything else with an Apple logo. Of course they NEED those things. Apple told them so.

(disclaimer: I’m a lifelong Apple fan)

I find it funny how the kind of blogs you are referring too are set up and populated by segments of society who feel their views are all prevailing. We on here like mechanical watches some of us accept a battery watch as part of their collection. I don't think many on here are anti electrical tech though, we all use it to run our lives, I personally just have a love for these mechanical devises we call watches, hi end are exclusive, more attractive, some made of exotic materials, some watches that operate in extreme conditions are even more attractive.

it is to the loss of people young, old or middle aged who exclude anything from their lives because they feel its outdated or for the wrong age group or the wrong gender or too modern and new. Without a doubt there will always be room for these high end time pieces. some of the most modern technology is based on micro mechanics and as machines get smaller it will be mechanics that move things forward, the same tech that mechanical watches are based on. for me electrical devices are a facilitator where as mechanical devices do things. Both have to work in tandem, as a team if you like. So debate all you want too Both are here to stay. Same goes for arguments about gender and age. In my view, intolerance is the enemy of the human race and its progress.

For time indication, just have a look at your smartphone but as an identification or expression of personality, i watch is a pretty interesting thing
Not only a tool to tell time.

A silly existential debate. My practical snow belt mind set precludes owning a sports car. Does that stop me from subscribing to Auto Week, appreciating great design or being happy for those who indulge? Hell no. I have my hobbies. I'm unapologetic about them. As long as they are legal and don't hurt anyone and I can afford them .... Get Off My Lawn!

I feel ridiculous at times when I think how much I have spent on watches...then I look down at my wrist, and all is forgiven 😉

To be fair, everyone is in a different place and could use some counter-prevailing opinions at times as a sanity check.

I tend to surround myself with other WIS where an "affordable and respectable" watch is still generally on the magnitude of $3-5k. Now, I realize this is an arbitrary number and there are plenty of lower priced options.

But if you're consistently exposed to higher and higher amounts, it has a way of skewing your perception of price, cost, and financial exposure. This is especially true when so many of my watch friends subscribe to the "I can always sell this watch and get my money back" mentality.

Anyway, my opinion is spend money on what you like. Just make sure you have the money to spend it. I'm looking at you "kid with student loans but somehow bought a Rolex".

"An elegant timepiece for a more civilized age" as Obi-Wan would say.

People who think a $50 Casio is as good as a multi-thousand $ Omega should definitely buy the Casio. More Omegas for me.

Incidentally, I do see plenty of young people wearing watches around my college campus, maybe as many as half.

How foolish of me: rather than investing in the enjoyment my small art collection brings me each day, I could have simply photographed the artwork (with my iPhone, of course), printed it and hung it on the wall. Performs the same function, right kids?

Perspective is everything...never thought I would ever consider a Rolex as a 'mid-level' luxury watch

Just to clarify, I still think they are freaking expensive 😉
