Swiss Watches vs Casio? Same function, 100x price?

I consider myself semi-young, but I like old and new alike.
I enjoy staring through the display caseback of my Navitimer. Mechanical watches truly are a piece of art, if you think of all the things required for one to accurately tell the time.
I also listen to vinyl via a tube amp, because I think glowing tubes look awesome, and having a physical music medium gives me more enjoyment than streaming music does.
I also use Spotify for ease of use, have a GPS running watch and like things with screens in general.

I guess I just like a lot of things 馃榿

Why eat sushi, or spend lots of money on a Michelin-starred dinner when you could eat rice and beans for a lot less?

Why Instagram how your $25 avocado toast brunch matches your $250 raw selvedge jeans, on your $800 iPhone, when you could just paint a picture of it while wearing a Snuggie?

Why would you take a $3000 trip to Japan, through Southeast Asia and into India when you could just drive to the local mall?

For me, it鈥檚 kind of a good feeling knowing my grandparents came from Switzerland. So I carry my Victorinox pocket knife and wear my Swiss watches just for the nostalgic feeling.

A silly existential debate. My practical snow belt mind set precludes owning a sports car. Does that stop me from subscribing to Auto Week, appreciating great design or being happy for those who indulge? Hell no. I have my hobbies. I'm unapologetic about them. As long as they are legal and don't hurt anyone and I can afford them .... Get Off My Lawn!

So Larry, being in the Snow belt, there are the great 4-5 months to ride the snow mobile and the not so great other months to ride the snowmobile...

Hmm feel the same way about my beach cats. Summer too short. Never got bit by the snowmobile bug.

That thread devolved into a war of analogies. I really dislike analogies. They never provide added insight.

It's like having physics explained by an elementary schooler rather than by a college professor.

I have an SMP300 and a new Speedy pro. Is there room for an iwatch ? if so when do I wear it? and when do the proper watches get worn? its a growing dilemma. Anyone got this figured yet?

I think you were referring to the Apple Watch when you wrote iwatch, but I鈥檓 not sure. Maybe you meant to write new watch. Im going to write something about the Apple Watch anyway.

The more adventure and fitness oriented they make the Apple Watch, the more clear it is when to use it; at least for me anyway. The new Apple Watch 3 has an altimeter and GPS as well as water resistance, so I plan on using it for climbing mountains, hiking, surfing, running, etc. Not to mention all of the other awesome stuff you can do with a smart watch.

For me the cost of the Apple Watch is very low compared to my other watches, so I feel as though I can be more adventurous with it. The only downside is that any smart watch will be basically obsolete in three years, where as a well made mechanical or manual timepiece can out live us, with the right care.

Also, if you鈥檙e having trouble deciding when to wear each watch, just remember that Seamasters like the sea and Speedmasters like to go fast.

What about German cars versus Japanese cars. Shirts made in the US or China vs. shirts made in Italy.

As we all know, there is no such thing as a free lunch on this planet.

For time indication, just have a look at your smartphone but as an identification or expression of personality, i watch is a pretty interesting thing
Not only a tool to tell time.

But why not just have a look at your watch for time indication? It's on the wrist, the phone is not.

I understand that most people are using their smart phones every 30 sec to see if there are any messages, if though they haven't heard the 'beep', to see if there are any interesting updates om Instagram, facef%ck or Snapchat or whatever since last time they checked 30 sec ago, which most certainly there is not. Or checking the breaking news 10 times a day. Why? Why not just read a paper written by actual journalists, when you get home.

I am a great fan of my IPhone too but I sure as heck don't use it to tell time, when I can just look at my wrist.

One of my favorite things about a fine mechanical watch, is that it is one of the, if not the only material good that can be purchased nowadays, that is not meant to fall apart in a few years. Most products, especially technology, are built to have a short shelf life. I love that Omegas, Rolexes, etc, are still built to last a lifetime.

I would choose a fine watch over a luxury car any day.

Exactly that. A good watch is one of the few remaining things you can buy which harks back to the days when craftsmanship and quality mattered. They're anachronistic in an age when everything has built-in obsolescence. I think you either appreciate the intrinsic beauty and value in that, or you don't.

I agree 100%. Ideally, i would own both, but if I had to choose, it鈥檚 a luxury watch all the way. The watch goes with me everywhere. I can only drive my car from A to B and then it sits outside next to other cars. Anyone who has come out to their car only to find that their bumper is hanging off with no note understands the risk associated with owning a nice car. Or door dents, scratches, etc. Especially, in Southern California where driving is a requirement, but where there are millions of other cars that want to hurt your car. Then there is the bird poop, rocks, and other elements that want to attack your car.

Story disclosure - someone did hit my car in the middle of the night and knocked off and broke the rear bumper without leaving a note. Insurance didn鈥檛 cover it, because it cost $550 to repair and the deductible was $800. So, that was useless. I repaired it myself for a little bit less. Then the next day I went shopping at Target, only to come out to the parking lot and find that somebody scraped up my brand new bumper. Again, another hit and run. Haha it was insane. I couldn鈥檛 imagine having an aluminum body Tesla in those situations. I would be too afraid to take it anywhere.

You have to be rich enough to not care about what happens to your car. It鈥檚 like constantly yacht diving in the Mediterranean with you AP ROO and not rinsing it with warm water afterwards. A wealthy, reckless rebel.

I would rather buy a watch than buy some non-luxury cars. The average car costs $33,356 in the US, with the average age of cars on the road being 11 years and new car buyers keeping their cars for an average of six years. The average car price is not including maintenance and insurance, which can be very expensive over a 6 to 11 year time frame.

You see an analogy, I see an illustration of context: We all have our own interests that we like to spend our discretionary income on; why question someone else's when they could just as easily question yours?

Oh maybe he was
Maybe not? Using an analogy to trash analogies.

This is why we need a sarcasm font!!!

My head hurts.

I have worn a watch from a young age. This was well before the advent of mobile phones. Now, I still wear a watch because, when I'm at work, I never have my phone on me (for security reasons). My watch is a necessity - better make it a good one! So, I appreciate the artistry and engineering involved in a mechanical watch, and it is always m constant companion. I can't remember the last time I had a day without a watch on my wrist. Oh, and by the way, I'm well under 40!
