Strange new behaviour with images

I noticed just after upgrading Safari that when I open a thread containing an image, there will only be a frame containing the image name for about a second, and then the image loads.

MacBook Pro 13" M1 / Safari 15.6.

Anybody else?

Tis Big Brother 😲 🙁

I noticed the same (Safari, iPad mini 6th), though it happens on Chrome also. Could be the government’s cyber safety agenda kicking in, or maybe something to with how the images are stored…

It never happened before (on all of my platforms) so that's why I noticed it and can only link it to the Safari update.

Same here, on my iPhone, but only occasionally.
Also can’t reply using the highlight method.

It's having a serious effect on my Rebus solving too 🤬.

While I'm waiting a couple of seconds for the images to load, @Canuck is jumping in and grabbing the prize!

Sounds like a good illustration of why many choose not to upgrade until new software has been around for a year or two, and the bugs have (largely) been resolved. I'm still using Safari 14.1.2

It’s a bit of a bigger risk falling too behind because at least with a new version it’s likely to be fixed quickly and be relatively minor, while old versions have security vulnerabilities and exploits that can be dangerous

I’m noticing this too. It’s caused me to run a diagnostic on my mesh and internet connection.

A fair point, though I'm glad that it doesn't apply to hardware. I'm using a 2012 Mac Mini, and drive a 2010 Audi A3, and with respect to cars, it could be argued that late models are, in some respects, a greater "security risk" than earlier models!

Also happening to me, so is it only in Australia?
Aus here too. Just upgraded my M1 Macbook Air and testing on Safari 15.6, haven't seen the issue yet. Still trying to duplicate it.

Does anyone have a specific thread that's a good example?

Try the Rebus thread. Plenty of posts with images attached. It happened to me a short while ago, but only on the images that I had uploaded, for some reason.

I'm doing the Safari 16.0 beta, not seen issues. Share a link and I'll try it. USA, though.

It's any thread that when opened, and a photo is on the page there is a second where it just shows the frame before it populates with the image.

I just tried it on my Surface4 Laptop/Chrome104 and while the frame doesn't appear, the image takes a second to load.

It's not a big issue and I can live with it, just thought I'd flag it.

Just to be clear, images shouldn't load until you're approaching them (meaning an entire thread doesn't just load all at once if you're sitting at the top of the page). However, it shouldn't be excessively slow or enough of a delay that you're noticing and waiting for it.

It's up to your web browser to decide how soon to load new images, maybe this release of Safari has changed behaviors? Perhaps Safari didn't support this at all previously. Internet speed could be a factor too.

We'll test on Safari 16 too, to see if it's any different. Still looking for any odd behavior. Rebus puzzles seemed fine too. 🤔

I am not seeing this issue on my current Macbook Air or iPhone 13pro, USA based.
