So 6 were supplied to the movie production company……..but how many were actually worn by McQueen whilst making the film?
So there is a fair chance that he never actually wore this particular watch, maybe some production big wig wore this one as a perk!
So the estimated sale price is a hell of a premium to pay for something a wardrobe prop that might have been worn by McQueen, but also might’ve been worn by some director, producer or the wardrobe chief

Nunley said that McQueen wore all six at some point, though there’s no way of knowing which piece was on McQueen’s wrist in any given scene. “

The provenance of this watch seems a bit "word of mouth" Alot of $$$ for a watch that was not actually part of McQueen's watch collection

agreed - it is all word of mouth, which might be a problem.

However, if you are old enough to have gone to the cinema to see Le Mans (which was seminal) then to possess a proven watch from the film is equally desirable to a watch from McQeen’s personal collection ( or even more so).

That's my point, after all how many watches are really needed by wardrobe for production one for the actor playing the character, a spare and any required for the actors doubles, probably not needed for an actor like McQueen who is said to have done most of his own stunts.
So if there were some worn by the doubles, they would be unlikely to have also been worn by the star!
Just because 6 watches were supplied to the production company doesn't mean that they were all worn by the star,or even the doubles, it's highly likely that the only times some of them were worn on set during filming was by senior production staff as a perk.
So even if this watch can be traced back to being one of those 6, any possibility that it was actually worn by McQueen is a bit of Russian roulette for the prospective buyer.

did you not see the quote above from Don Huntley the prop master on Le Mans?

whilst it is still word of mouth, what provenance betters that of the word of the guy who both ordered the watches and controlled the watches on set? (And has no apparent skin in the game)

The prop master on the film confirmed all 6 were worn by Steve at some point.

Only way to verify. All are of equal weight. The 2 not in the museam have documented provenance going back to the movie.

I’m not sure why people are all of a sudden questioning provenance here. It’s more solid than a lot of watches.

Probably as provenance is often used to pump up the price way beyond an items true value, it is used to pray on the gullible who fall for the cult of celebrity.
Provenance only true value is to help determine the authenticity of something truly unique, it has no moral value in being used to massively inflate the price of a mass produced item that is for all intents and purposes, identical to all the others of it's kind.
It might be nice to be able to say that something you own might've been owned/worn/used by a celebrity or some such, but how much would it be really worth to you to be able to say so? $10, $100 maybe even $1,000 but surely not a $1,000,000!

There are only a few actors who can legitimately be called 'cool'.....Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, both who were actually involved in motorsports in their private lives. Any watch connected to either of these guys is valuable, it automatically has authentic street cred and is going to have massive appeal and a resulting high price tag.

It was worth about $17,000,000 for Paul Newman's Paul Newman Daytona! But that was a Rolex. 👍

this

and at the risk of repeating myself, these watches were props in a seminal film that many petrolheads of a certain age hold dear.
