Starting search for a good value Ed White

Hi I have been on and off looking for an Ed White. I am not looking for a pristine example, just a daily wearer that shows it's vintage.

Prices are all over the place which generally stops me looking into too much detail, but watches like this catch my eye now and then and I wonder how this stacks up ?

I see:

  • 321 movement and looks ok (serial unknown, but commercial seller with feedback so probs knows what he is selling)
  • bezel is poor but seems original. I don't want perfect.
  • dial seems original T SWISS MADE T but lume plots not great.
  • crystal poor and stops you seeing if dial is ok.
  • pushers maybe original
  • service crown I think
  • hands seem correct length, aged and seconds hand seems correct end shape.
  • case can't really tell properly from the pictures, but seems correct

So I think a generally a poor watch, poor pictures and a gamble. But it is bottom of the price scale £4k (5.5k USD) and IF the dial is great, if case is ok, serial is good, minimal service parts, then maybe there is room for service and crystal built into the price.

Is this value ? hmm personally I dont think it is low enough for me to buy, but it's not far off. I am interested to hear other opinions.

Looks like someone decided not to pay up after a standard auction last month. (8 days ago).

Funny that I found this seller earlier in the week (different item), and I'm in Australia.
I wasn't keen on this bit:
but that's just personal. I don't think their photography is good enough to be doing this; especially at this price level.

Yes I saw that, partly why I am asking for opinions here. Looks like it went the full duration to get that price too.

Shilling that didn't go to plan, a return or non-payer ? Difficult to know

I don't think it is deal of the century and others like this do come up occasionally. I do wonder is there value in Ed Whites at this lower end of the market, maybe room for a re-lume or a better dial.

I can't see the bid history on the previous auction.
Further checking could give you confidence in not losing too much if you 'gamble' and don't like the dial.

Given only a week gone by, probably unlikely to be a return,

Just looked that up through eBay.com.au and genuinely scared myself with the currency conversion.
I'm way too many years out of the Speedmaster game to be giving any advice.

Might be worth a message through eBay to see if they are interested in offers.
I'd also ask if they offered it as "second chance" to the under bidder. No idea whether you'd get an honest answer but asking doesn't cost anything.

I don't think you'll be having sleepless nights in a years time that this was "The One" that got away.
Happy hunting!

It is back Ebay Ed White with a Best Offer. I don't think it will last very long even with less than stellar condition.

There's certainly such a thing as patina. But then there's 'beat to shit.' Yikes.

Biggest concern? It's been 'Frankensteined.'

Black and dark green lume is a deal breaker for me. The watch could be free and I would not wear it.

I see the appeal of beat up watches. I might over pay for a watch that is in poor condition but has original parts and wear. But it's got to have a rustic appeal. Green mold is like looking at a decaying body, as opposed to a elderly person with sagging and craggy skin but sparkling eyes.

This looks like an honest, but extremely well worn watch. The seller is a UK reseller who gets large lots of watches, almost exclusively in worn/unrestored condition / filthy, heavily scratched crystals etc.

I do wonder whether their inventory is picked over either before or after they get it, as the dials are often poor in the watches they sell and I’d expect a higher proportion of ‘diamonds in the rough’ given their volume.

Personally I wouldn’t drop £4k on a crap Ed White. Much better to either add funds to get a better example or use the £4k to buy a good example of a later, cheaper reference. Even if you want a beater, I can’t see much attraction with this one.

Agreed: watches in assisted living I will buy; this example’s in hospice.
