I don’t know why but I find ST#1 a bit underwhelming, may be because it’s not very true to the Alaska Project, that it was supposed to represent some way.

Whatever I’ve read about the Alaska Project, it was all about the legibility of the dial and ST#1 is not very legible in certain light conditions and/or at certain angle due to brushed hands and the dials layout.

There may also be some service issues in future with the luminous subdials as perhaps @Archer pointed out in one of the previous threads.

On the contrary ST#2 is a really unique watch that represents both Ultraman, the watch and the TV serial, with some very interesting twists.

This is my humble opinion only and not an attempt to undermine otherwise a splendid design watch that ST#1 is.

Just hang on to the original dial during servicing. Original dial regardless of condition, is the way to go imho.

Can somebody who already got his Ultraman tell me the dimensions of the outer packaging.

I am going to collect my Ultraman tomorrow and don't know of it fits into hand luggage.

Thanks

I don’t have the outer box (brown one) but the main box is nominally 265 x 205 x 170mm. Add 10mm all sides and you won’t be far out

I can respond this specific sentiment. I was in China for a week of meetings last week and I was wearing my new Ultraman. During a team dinner with many Chinese colleagues I mentioned my new watch being called the "Ultraman". I pulled out the UV light I keep in my laptop bag and showed them the glowing Ultraman head (aka the 'blob'). Many of them immediately recognized who "Ultraman" was and they began reminiscing about the show. I bought the watch for what it looks like (everything but the 'blob') and didn't think much of the "Ultraman" tie-in until I saw how strongly the team in China connected to it.

I still don't think much of the blob, but I am glad it is more discrete than I first feared it might be.
Mine now that it is on a Di Modell Rallye strap.

This is my humble opinion only and not an attempt to undermine otherwise a splendid design watch that ST#1 is.

I think both watches honor their respective historic pieces about the same. The Fratello team and Omega did not want to create exact replicas of the watches that inspired either watch. Hence ST1 gets the opaline subdials and lume on everything and ST2 gets all these extra nods to the Ultraman TV series (orange Tachymetre, orange Speedmaster print, orange in the minutes sub-register, the beta capsule sub-seconds hand, and of course the blob). Outside of those items and their case backs, every dial, bezel, and case aspect of these watches are correct to the watches that inspired them. I think that's really cool. Heck, even the Speedmaster font on each watch is period correct.

Also, remember there were many Alaska project watches and ST1 is inspired by Alaska Project III. It's meant to be anti-reflective to block out glare when in extreme conditions of sunlight hence all the brushed surfaces and no polished surfaces. I believe it was just a prototype though and NASA never bought into it so just 50 some were made. So, perhaps they felt it wasn't the best functional design.
