In this edition of Speedy Tuesday, we look at an experimental Omega Speedmaster that is a thing of real beauty. NASA introduced my dream version in the early 1970s, but sadly, it was never a production model. The Omega Speedmaster needs no introduction. Suffice it to say, the Speedmaster is one of the most iconic […]

Well, at least 2 NASA-issued numbered Speedmaster chronographs have come up for auction. In December 2015, even the spaceflown 861 bezelless Speedmaster of Apollo 17's Heat Flow Experiment was auctioned as post-flight it became Ronald Evans' memento property. None of these three had a practical "60 seconds" bezel.
1968 NASA astronauts feedback pointed out they wanted a practical bezel and a more legible subdials setup. Note in the 1975 ASTP training photo astronaut Vance Brand wearing a NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster chronograph with practical 60 seconds bezel. When talking with Apollo 15 CMP Alfred Worden (Berlin January 2019) I got direct insights in what NASA astronauts really wanted and why half-a-dozen astronauts wore a Speedie with 60 seconds bezel.
Soon more in an elaborate #moonwatchuniverse article!

I'll never understand Omegas refusal to even make a 60 second dial. Doesn't have to be standard, but an option like the pulse meter.

When was the last time anyone really ever uses the tachy

Let's remind Omega about the radial dial:

And they know since I shared some photos in 2016 #Moonwatchuniverse and instead of keeping quiet, contacted Hodinkee 😗

Omega used the practical "60 seconds" bezel for the 1972 Alaska II Project Speedmaster, and even had it printed on the red outer case!
The 1972 Alaska Project even had extra luminous dots in the subdials of the Silver- white dial.
We can only speculate why the practical "60 seconds" bezel was abandoned in the 1978 Alaska III project Speedmaster, a wonderful radial dial chronograph used onboard the space shuttle between 1981 and November 1995.

I do like the radial dials. If I see one of the new Moonswatches with the radial dial I'll probably buy one

I learn something everyday. Many thanks to you and @SpeedyPhill for showing the radial dial and 60 second bezel. Stunning.

I wish they would offer alternate bezels - pulsations or decimal. Does anyone know whether buying them somewhere other than crawling through eBay is possible?

You can have pulsations. There's a part number for it

That would be cool. So I can order it directly through a boutique? I wonder why this isn't advertised anyhow...

My understanding is OB or AD should be able to order it.

If you search for pulsations you should find the part number here somewhere

Has anyone ever tried it, or does everybody love the "tachymetre" so much? 😀
