DONT LOSE HOPE For anyone who didn't get a reserved Ultraman do not lose hope just yet. I was called last week by London OB which is 7hrs from me. They told me a ST1 is here and as they could not contact the buyer but I was next on their list so I would have to go down as they couldn't send it anywhere. I thought in all honesty at this point that someone was having me on but I was very excited. So I rang my local OB at Trafford centre Manchester where Ian who remembered me from a previous watch purchase confirmed it as real and it was the last one in the world to be given out. He sorted out delivery to Manchester and within minutes he rang me back and confirmed it was on its way. At this point I just cant believe my luck. Three days after the phone call I managed to get a nice low number reserved for ST2 Ultraman. I am one jammy sod and very happy. But it goes to show that the waiting list does work and Omega followed it up and found me. I will say Ian at the OB in Manchester is a top guy and i recommend to anyone local to ask for him. I picked my watch up this morning and he even gave me some goodies to go with it. I will try and upload photos after but I'm fairly new to posting and not sure how as yet.

What a fantastic story. I look forward to seeing the pictures.

I thought mine was late being last December, an amazing story and well done getting an ST2 reserved.

What was the purpose for using aluminum for the dial?

I believe normal Speedmaster dials are made of brass like almost all watch dials. Please help me understand this part of watchmaking. Perhaps Archer may pitch in and enlighten us.

If they start the delivery in August, it will probably be unit by unit, unless they have changed dramatically and lately their production processes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the anniversary seamaster(s) released in Basel this year have not even hit the stores yet and only a few ck2998 have been released so far. So delay is likely imho. Furthermore, by the time the last ST2 will be delivered, Omega will have shown all the novelties for the moon landing 50th anniversary. So I would not be surprised if quite a few people decide to back down and not to go ahead with the ST2.
Good points.

Just one further point if you’re considering when funds might be available for your purchases, Omega say August for the start of deliveries, that is very unlikely on past performance. The ST1 was launched in January last year and I don’t believe deliveries began until the autumn, the same with the 57 triogly which kept going back and back.

Just once small correction, the vast majority were certainly severely delayed, but I collected mine early July last year so they certainly started delivering much earlier than Autumn. Also it was announced in January with a suggested release for the Summer, rather than launched in Jan.

I have a feeling they'll be much more on top of deliveries this time around, they'll have surely learnt from their mistakes and to confidently suggest Summer 2018 again I think they must be pretty sure about it, I was expecting a less committed delivery estimate this time around TBH.

Have always done that 😉

More of a reply to the " be made " comment below.

Don't think a deposit has anything to do with it as a flipper still has to purchase it before he can flip it. A deposit isn't going to change anything really.
Begging you pardon - in total agreement with you. It was merely a suggestion not a solution

Based on the comments from a co-creator, it's because Omega cheaped out - easier to form aluminum than brass. Typically you tailor the process to the product, but this was done the other way around.

Any reason (other than historically) why it should be brass over aluminum? Surely an already oxidized aluminum dial (think aeroplanes) would be a great choice for a long lasting non corroding dial?

So. What do we think? Which will hold/gain value years from now more? ST1 or ST2?

Probably why the step was removed in the first place, cost. With that reasoning why are we just now making mass production vehicles out of aluminum. If they could have made aluminum stepped dials in the sixties they would have.

I can't say anything terribly specific here, because the alloy information is not known, but generally brass alloy is a very stable material that stands up very well over time. It's the reason most watch movements are made of brass, and not aluminum...

The first thing that comes to mind for me is how well the dial would stand up to mechanical shocks - for example when a watch is dropped and the dial feet are under stress. With a brass dial the dial feet can be bent back easily and typically it takes a lot to have them snap off. Not sure how well aluminum would perform under the same conditions, so can I bend the feet back straight without them breaking off? With brass the feet can be manipulated a lot before there is risk of them breaking. If the dial feet did break off on an aluminum dial, how easily could they be soldered back on compared to a brass dial? With how quickly aluminum forms an oxide layer I'm not sure if the normal dial repair methods would work...when aluminum is welded it usually is done with inert shielding gas to prevent that oxide from forming and interfering with the bond.

Sorry more questions than answers but that's dealing with unknowns...

Thanks Southern Scot that’s an extremely helpful reply, very much appreciated. I’m from Edinburgh. Lots of great background information there. With that in mind I suspect I will go for the ck2998 when I get the chance then. Cheers!
A fellow Jambo! Welcome

I managed to reserve an ultraman so if you see one at Tynecastle it’s probably on my wrist 😉

I think we would have to handle both live to make a judgment.

For those of us who are waiting for another chronograph that has cool orange feature at 9’o’clock. This is the running seconds in the shape of a Topping tool.
