About the tennis discussion, don`t you think that the shock from hitting the ball get transferred to the watch?

It probably depends on how hard one swings the racket. While professional tennis players probably generate a lot of speed, older people generally can't swing too hard.

Oh, all members got me wrong.
All I want to say when you do tough work it's better to take another quartz watch. It's cheap and you don't need to worry. Sometimes, it does help and save you a lot. If you damage the chronograph watch you will end paying a lot and other thread clearly shows that.
I am sure no one really tested but if you seriously shake to the maximum level you could your mechanical watches they will lose or gain time just in a few minutes (by the way I did that stupid test, Speedy was not the best, Hamilton was more accurate in the end).
Golf and tennis could be ok, but anything more than that should be avoided.

I mostly wear a "good watch" but if setting about jumping in and doing something that could increase the chance of damaging the watch unnessarily, I will take it off and put it aside out of the road where possible.
With many interests and commitments that can and do put watches at risk I have seriously considered a G-shock of some description, but with removing and putting the watch out of harms way I can still check the time when it occurs to me and not have the inconvenience of something on the wrist to get in the way and or catch on things like machinery when working on or around it.

Besides, I'm not about throwing more work at a watchmaker and improving their profitability whilst throwing my own money out the window recklessly🙁

Proper, regular and on time maintenance is the key word at an AD so you will have the gaskets, crown, pushers replaced on a regular basis with each service.
With that, if you do not entertain a major accident with this watch, I see no reason why he would not last 50 years.

Speaking of repetitive stress: should I give my adolescent son a Speedmaster, or wait until he’s older?

Speedy-durability! Not often you see those two words in the same sentence.

The Speedmaster was made for rich boys to time their sport cars in the late fifties. Then it qualified to be worn in a zero gravity, dry and basically a laboratory environment in a space craft. The moon is pretty dry too. So what do you think, is the "Lawnmaster" a durable watch? Have a look around OF and you will see that nearly 75% of the treads are people worrying about their Speedys in some way.

What you should do is get a Seamaster, never any problem with those watches, they are mostly used by miners, divers and people affected by spontaneous human combustion.

Also they are sexy as he..

OH MY...he's SOOOOO controversial. The 75 percent exaggeration you note is because 95 percent of the members here wear Speedmasters that they love. Of course most of the commentary is related to Speedmasters. I deleted much of my initial comment. It was more entertaining but less gentle and spoke to the the reason why certain members of a community lash out passively AND aggressively against an established majority. Speedmasters aren't cheap. I understand. Maybe someday. hen-and-egg__ResizedImageWzg1MCwzOTld.png

Did you.read the part about spontaneous human combustion? 😉 One should think that was a clear give away to my intention in making that post.

All I know is that I was wearing my Speedmaster while brushing one of my Maine coons last night while she purred like a roaring fire, and noticed that the watch was running 3 minutes fast afterwards!!! I think these members concerned about excessive vibration are onto something. It's not that the production is different then it was when these were riding the vibrations of Saturn Rockets through the atmosphere and into space, it's that the very nature of our reality has changed! I blame the invention of the internet, it must have created subtle and Sinister changes in the very fabric of our simulation.

Shame.

It must be the static electricity form brushing the cat that affected the balance spring. Your summer blue Seamaster would have taken the electric shock like a champ! So no lawn moving and no pet petting with a Speedy, at least you can go to the moon.

No pictures of the Main Coon?

If it survives my abuse it will certainly survive yours.
And you have 5 years warranty if something goes wrong. I’d say Speedy is ideal daily watch: not too bling but indicates the nobility of the wearer 😀
What are all those cups about? Trophies? 😵‍💫

Bought my 3861 in March 2022.
Last time I set it was Nov. 29th, 2023. Since then, I've been using it daily, winding it daily, and using the chronograph every once in a while. Went from warm South America to snow mountains in Europe.
It's Feb. 18th, 2024 today, 82 days since I last set it. It gained 11 seconds in the meantime, so +0.13 sec a day if my math is good.
A few weeks ago, I noticed a very small mark in the sapphire, that I was able to spot under a very specific light at a restaurant, but I recently tried to see it and couldn't find it. Tried again today but it seems to have disappeared. Except for that, and a couple of marks on the steel, it's been working flawlessly.

Ok, I’ve decided to settle the issues raised in this thread once and for all. As we all know, NASA selected the Speedmaster for manned space flight after the watch was the only model to pass a series of grueling tests. Well, I’ve decided to one up NASA with my own series of tests. Trust me, these tests were actually conducted.

First, direct impact test (Speedmaster was strapped to boulder facing the impact):

Result: PASS

Next: rapid deceleration test while in flight (pilot wearing Speedmaster):
Result: PASS

Wild animal attack (human subject wearing Speedmaster):

Result: PASS

Electromagnetic pulse (Speedmaster has no microchip).
Result: PASS

Cyborgs (T1000 wearing Speedmaster).
https://youtube.com/shorts/T6y-NVTkhIM?si=hGUxaLCpssTd_LjF
Result: PASS

Radical vertical impact simulation (pilots wearing Speedmasters).
Result: PASS

Well, there you have it. The Speedmaster is one tough watch.

That`s settled then no need for any more "can I knit with my Speedy on" treads. All it needed was a little science and hard work. Thank you for your effort gbesq.
