Where are these condescending and hateful comments you mention? The guy asked for opinions and I think that's what followed, I can't see any hate here, just open discussion. Some people seem a bit over sensitive.
I could answer your question but I can’t be bothered is you are one of those people that settle with a “reduced”

.... and just like that we have a condescending response!!!! ::rimshot::

First of all, ignore the condescending comments. These forums are filled with people that will clutter the threads with hate just because. The best thing you can do is not engage them and leave them to their hate.

As for the Speedy Reduced. I love it. I own a Speedy Pro and I would never give it up, but I will be the first to admit that it is a big watch that taxes my 7" wrist to the limit. Thankfully it has a decent lug to lug. The Reduced has a more appealing 39mm size, and while I love manual wind watches there are many who appreciate the automatic movement offered by the Reduced a bit more. It is a lovely watch. Enjoy it!

I personally thought SG was downright rude. I would have more respect for that high handed attitude if he hadn’t immediately undermined it in the Sinn thread by admitting he looks down on watches over $1000 which use a basic ETA movements, rather like the Reduced in fact...

The reduced will always play second fiddle to the Pro.

When people are asked for an opinion on the Speedmaster reduced, this is typical of the sort of answer that surfaces! If only they would add, “IN MY OPINION” to the statement! IN MY OPINION, I prefer my reduced to my Speedmaster Professional!

In fairness, when one says something its always considered an opinion. The differences are if the opinion is correct, a fact or subjective. One shouldn't be required to have a declaimer.

People who like it: ignorant n00bs who will settle for second best.
People who don't like it: haters.

Anyway, I haven't worn or seen one in the flesh, ever, but will propose that some of the "hatred" towards the model stems from it being a derivative from a classic; a Boxster to a 911. It will be compared to a well-known and appreciated design which it mimicks, but as some of the core qualities that defines that particular design has been altered it will be critisised for that, regardless of what other qualities it brings to the table.

I liked the reduced until I saw the side profile. I did not like that the pushes and the crown were on different planes.

In my short time here and owning a Speedy Pro, I’ve picked up on some distinct undertones of love/hate for this reference.

It seems to go from outright disdain for it, to condescending comments like, “oh, yeah, try to enjoy it for what it is.”, to good-camaraderie cheering on our fellow watch enthusiasts, to the other end of the spectrum with people super psyched to make this their intentional selection.

I get it, we’re a group of widely varying tastes and opinions but this model really seems to polarize and exist with a reputation. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone say, “enjoy it for what it is.” about a Submariner.

Anyways, what’s the real deal here? Do people really love, hate, or love-to-hate the Speedy? Is there good reason it’s looked down upon? Is it looked down upon?

Looking forward to your thought.

There, works just as well with the fixes I made to your post...

Interesting...

I was just contemplating a similar vein of thought - but one watch vs another within the same brand. For instance, do people look down upon a Submariner because it is the diminutive brother to the Sea Dweller (yeah, the Sub did come first but the SD is deeper rated, etc)? Or consider the AP15202 subpar compared to the AP15500?

Pick any 2 watches that occupy a similar space and there are likely big differences of opinion.

Personally, I like the older Sea Dweller better than sub-date, because I like the date but without cyclops. I think the majority opinion might be that sub no-date > sub date > sea dweller (based on online "popularity"), but not everyone shares that opinion. Some people can come up with a long winded argument why one is better than another, others simply prefer the look of one over the other, others like to follow the crowd or follow models with greatest price appreciation... at the end of the day, to each their own. 😎
