Speedmaster Pro Cal. 3861 - Seconds hand move when setting time

Hi guys,

As you will probably be able to tell from this post, I am new to the wonderful world of horology, and finally bought myself an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch caliber 3861. So do excuse this newbie post!

Reaching out here because I noticed that the seconds hand moves a little when I’m setting the time (forwards when rotating the crown clockwise, and backwards when rotating anti-clockwise).

I understand that with the new cal. 3861, it is a hacking movement and the seconds hand should be static when setting the time.

Is this a normal observation? Or am i holding on to a defective piece? For what it’s worth, I notice that this happens only when I’m setting the time BEFORE winding. If I do a full wind first before setting the time, the seconds hand does stay still as I’m rotating the crown to set the time.

Thanks in advance for understanding this newbie paranoia!

Can you be a more specific than "moves a little"? For example, does the seconds hand continue moving as long as you twist the crown to set the time, or does it just wiggle a bit in one direction or the other? How quickly and far does it move while you twist the crown? I think if you can describe the symptom in more detail then members here will provide opinions.

Sounds like simple lashing in gear systems. Happens to all watches, from independents, Journe, all the way to Miyota. A little bit of moving back and forth while rotating the crown is fine while hacked.

Hi
I have noted exactly the same on my watch same caliber as yours (moonwatch speedmaster 3861)
The seconds hand jerks of 1sec displacement (i.e. it jumps of 1sec before recovering the initial position) and in the backward direction only when setting the time counter clockwise. No jerk/jump when setting clockwise.
After several crowns rotations (and jerks if counter clockwise crown rotation) the seconds hand is always in the same position.
This happens to me even with a fully wound watch

this is finally Fine to set the time but can this be a wearing mechanism to the watch?

i am a newbie too and your advises are more than welcome please

thanks a lot

Uhmm, don't think you'll get an answer from a one time poster whom didn't even came back to read the replies.

It’s backlash...nothing to be concerned about.

I'm not familiar with this. I don't get it on my Blancpain f385 movement and my 1861 isn't hacking. Since I'm probably going to get a 3861, it's good to know in advance. Specifically, what's happening?

Not normal then?
Can you please be more explicit?
Thanks a lot
An Omega qualified watchmaker told you what it is called and said you don't have to be concerned, but it seems you're still concerned.

Gears have backlash - doesn't matter if it's new or not. This is completely normal.

Just listen to the advice, relax and enjoy. If you don't want to listen, go to a Watchmaker, pay for the advice and relax after that.
