Speedmaster Pro 145.022 - possible redial/service dial? Sanity check before I buy (Bangkok)
Looking at a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch from a seller here in Bangkok and would appreciate experienced eyes before I commit. Watch-only (replacement box, no papers), aftermarket strap, seller states it's been serviced but unable to provide the receipt.

Asking price is around USD 2900

Key details:

  • Cal. 861, manual wind
  • Inner caseback stamped ST 145.022
  • Tritium dial - "T SWISS MADE T" at the base
  • Seller dates it 1989–1996 (vague, no serial provided yet - I've requested the 8-digit movement serial)

What's giving me pause: No papers or original strap and the seller is marketing it on vintage eggshell tritium patina, but dating it neo-vintage. So I want to pressure-test originality before anything else.

Specific questions:

  1. Dial - original or redial/service dial? Does the printing look crisp and correct - Omega logo, "Speedmaster," "Professional" font, spacing, and the "T SWISS MADE T" placement/font? Any tells of a reprint (fuzzy edges, wrong kerning, wrong step/flat dial for the era)?
  2. Lume tone match - do the dial plots and the hands look like they've aged to the same colour? Mismatch would suggest a relume or a swapped service dial + replacement hands.
  3. Caseback vs era - does an "ST 145.022" caseback square with a 1989–1996 watch, or does that stamp point earlier? Trying to rule out a swapped caseback / parts marriage.
  4. Movement - anything in the cal. 861 shots that looks swapped, refinished, or inconsistent with the rest?
  5. Once I have the serial, what production year would you expect, and does that reconcile with the dial and caseback?
  6. Overall - does this read as an honest example, or are there franken/marriage warning signs?

Any feedback would be much appreciated 😀

    Thanks

But the pics show the serial.

Pragmatically you cannot go wrong for $2900 in BKK

Usually prices are high, quality is patchy, and knowledge is lacking, meaning parts watches get passed around unknowingly for high prices.

Finding any calibre 861 speedmaster for sub $3000 is a challenge, and this one looks good enough to take a chance on.

As for the dial, its got long S and long R. I am not so well versed in the 80'/90's dial but I like it.

If I saw this i'd buy it unless I saw something awful in hand that the photos dont show, or that in my excitement I have missed.

I think this must be just after the -78, as the bezel and dial are the same

Judging by the serial, this is a late 80s Speedmaster. And to my eyes, all parts match that date. Nice one!

And at that price point; you can’t go wrong imho.

I've just checked my Moonwatch Only book and it looks to be a C4 dial (Tall & Closed S, 1988/89-1991) - what do others think?

Dial- good

Lume- good with yellow patina typical for tritium minute hand lume a bit dark maybe little missing but still ok. Hand lume and dial lume often don’t match perfectly rhey are made by different venders

Caseback - good
Movement- good
Price- good
I see no reason not to buy it. Attractive example IMO

I'm really pleased for you! Do you plan to get a period-correct bracelet to go with it?

The caseback mark is ADB which produced from the late 89s to mid 90s, together with the movement number 4828xx or 4838xx it all points to an 1988 - 1992 Speedmaster. Dial is a match so it looks like a good watch except for the minute hand. Price is a Go but factor in a service for the movement at € 650 - 900 !
